The Carolina Panthers fans were elated when it was announced that billionaire David Tepper was buying their team. With the purchase, Tepper became the richest NFL owner at the time. However, six years later, it seems things have not panned out in the way that fans would’ve wanted. But as many things on the gridiron are bad for the Panthers playing team, Tepper’s portfolio has blown owing to the growth in the Panthers’ franchise value.

With almost all hopes dashed for the Panthers this season, should fans hang up their jerseys and merchandise and wait for the next season? But it seems a fatal mistake they made during the NFL Draft in 2023 has dire consequences for the franchise’s future.

Why David Tepper will make billions even after the Panthers’ losses

Joe Pompliano took to X to share the numbers behind Tepper’s two sports teams. Tepper purchased the football team for a whopping $23 billion in 2018, which grew 73% in value to $4.1 billion in 2023. The billionaire hedge-fund manager who founded and runs Appaloosa Management in Florida also owns the MLS team Charlotte FC. He had purchased the team for $325 million in 2019, and now its value has increased 92% to $625 million.

Pompliano saw this as a cause for concern. In his podcast, The Joe Pomp Show, he said, “But when you zoom out, this situation is really a microcosm of a billionaire with a chaotic ownership philosophy — one that is fast turning him into one of the worst owners in sports history.” And he is right. The situation has gotten from bad to worse for Carolina.

How badly are the Panthers faring?

With a 1-10 record this season so far, the Panthers are at the bottom of the league right now. They have also set an NFL record for the worst score after Week 12. Their only victory in the season so far, came against the Houston Texans which they won 15-13. As they are set to languish at the bottom after the completion of the season can they hope to at least turn things around next year?

Unfortunately, the answer is no, as the Panthers traded their first-round pick to the Chicago Bears during the NFL Draft 2023. They had traded the pick for an opportunity to sign Bryce Young to their team. The rookie had really great expectations on his shoulders when he was given charge of the team. But 12 weeks later, he has failed to give his team and their fans any hope.

Tepper’s soccer team, Charlotte FC, on the other hand, has not been doing half as badly. They finished 9th in the Eastern Conference this year, out of 15 teams. Will the NFL team turn around their fortunes as well?
