Marv Levy has been where Bill Belichick is now. Well, not exactly, but he’s the closest any person can come to understanding truly what Belichick is going through. The Hall of Famer coached the Buffalo Bills to four consecutive Super Bowls and stayed with them till age caught up with him at 72. In 1997, the Bills were 6-10. Levy saw the writing on the wall and promptly retired. But Belichick is different from Levy in this regard. It doesn’t look like he wants to step down anytime soon.

Belichick led the Patriots to 6 Super Bowl wins and 9 AFC Championships. He has been touted as the “most successful coach in the NFL”. But ever since his 4x SB MVP QB, Tom Brady parted ways with the New England Patriots, the dynasty is in shambles. In the current season, they are at an abysmal 2-7, and there are rumors of a change of guard in the air.

“I won’t be like Marv Levy and coach in my 70s.” That’s what Bill Belichick said about Levy in 2009 when he was 57. But, as The Boston Globe reported, Levy, who is just two years shy of hitting a century, is as sharp as ever. Although it has been 27 years since he left football, he still reminisces about the old days.

“About a year or two after I left, I felt I’d retired too soon,” said the 98-year-old coach. “I missed coaching. I regretted it and wanted to come back, but I was too old and no one would have hired me. If somebody would have hired me, I would have come sprinting back.” Levy, who holds no grudges, said in a manner of advice to the 72-year-old HC. His only advice is: don’t quit. He did it and regretted it just two years afterward.

On being asked how his performance had changed over the years as he neared his 70s, he said that he had begun to slow down. Earlier he would run wild sprints with his players, but eventually, he stopped doing that. At the time, only George Halas had stayed on longer than 72, but he had no desire to attempt to break his record. He hung up his cleats, or headphones rather, and went on a “vacation in Palm Springs”. But, how does the future look for Belichick? Will he also go the same route?

Belichick may thrive again if he changes teams

Levy had a fondness for Steve Belichick, Bill’s father, who was a Navy assistant coach. In 2022, an embarrassed Belichick took back his statements against Levy and said,I wish I hadn’t said that. That was not one of my better statements”. But the ever-generous Levy has one more advice for Bill: “If you don’t change with the times, the times are going to change you.”

While Belichick hasn’t said it himself, it seems that he’s holding on to his coaching job so that he can overtake Don Shula as the coach with the most number of wins at 347. Belichick is currently 331. And with the way that the Patriots are performing this season, it seems like a pipe dream. So, maybe his best bet would be to switch to a better team that he can make even better with his coaching. But will he be willing to leave the dynasty that he created along with Brady?
