Football dynasties are built on the shoulders of giants, and Tom Brady knows this better than most. Once wary of the looming threat of succession, the GOAT quarterback has come to embrace the cyclical nature of mentorship, lauding Aaron Rodgers‘ role in guiding the Packers‘ rising star, Jordan Love – a stark contrast to his earlier reservations about Jimmy Garoppolo’s ascent in New England Patriots.
Fast forward to the present, and Brady’s perspective has evolved, shaped by his own experiences with mentorship and the invaluable guidance he received from Drew Bledsoe and Bill Belichick. In a recent interview with Colin, Brady reflected, “I could not have been the player I was without people like that impacting my career.” He credited Bill Belichick, Charlie Weis, and a couple of others when it came to his development on the gridiron.
Thus, this newfound appreciation for veteran leadership was not a surprise for Brady who has over the years come to acknowledge the importance of the same. It was even more evident in his praise for Rodgers’ role in nurturing Jordan Love, stating, “He had Aaron Rodgers to watch. That’s the best type of training in my opinion – watch someone else do it at a very high level and then try to emulate them with your own personality.”

Love embraced the understudy role when he got drafted by Green Bay in 2020, soaking up every ounce of knowledge from Rodgers during his three-year apprenticeship. As Love himself put it, “He was a guy that I was able to ask so many questions to and just see him work and, um you know, be able to pick his brain and be in the same room as him was – awesome, something I’m very grateful for.”
His playoff debut, scoring three touchdowns and 272 yards with an almost perfect rating, leading to a 48-32 win over Dallas, was the culmination of years spent honing his craft under Rodgers’ tutelage. As Love embarks on his quest to etch his name alongside Packers greats like Favre and Rodgers, he does so passionately with the wisdom of those who came before, just as Brady once did.
A dynamic Brady himself experienced en route to becoming an NFL icon, bagging a plethora of records under his belt. However, his confidence in his skills might have still reserved himself and not exactly taken on a mentorship role when it came to his protege Garoppolo.
Tom Brady understands the importance of being a mentor now!
Back in 2014, when the Patriots drafted Garoppolo, Brady admitted to being caught off guard, questioning the team’s commitment to him. As detailed in the docuseries “Man In The Arena,” Brady confessed in 2021, “I really felt like I was giving my heart to the team, the city. I felt like I was setting down my roots, because I had committed to being in Boston. And then I didn’t necessarily feel like, ‘Oh, well that’s reciprocating.'”
It was a move that stirred up the competitive fire within Brady, who at the time had no intentions of slowing down, stating, “I was really beginning to understand how to take care of myself. I was really beginning to understand the game, how to study, how to be more efficient.”

Rumors of a frosty relationship between Brady and Garoppolo persisted. However, both quarterbacks have consistently praised their time together, with Brady stating, “I have a great relationship with all my teammates. I certainly did with Jimmy. I loved working with Jimmy.”
The parallels between Love’s journey and Brady’s path are uncanny, echoing the age-old adage, “From the student, a teacher emerges.” Just as Brady once stood in Bledsoe’s shadow, eager to prove himself, Love too faced the daunting task of stepping into the shoes of a Packers legend. Yet, it was Rodgers’ mentorship that equipped him with the tools to not only meet those lofty expectations but to surpass them. As Love reflected, “It motivates me to…get better and to try new things and to, you know, improve my game and try some of the things that I saw him doing.”
