Are the Chiefs risking Mahomes' prime by not aggressively pursuing top-tier receivers?

Despite Andy Reid’s announcement, the Chiefs are eyeing some hot prospects to rev up their offense for Patrick Mahomes—because let’s face it, Kansas City just cannot afford to let him wing it alone. Plus, they missed out on WR Davante Adams—so, who might join the party?

NFL insider Devon Clements dropped a gem of a tweet, talking about some potential targets the Chiefs might consider: DeAndre Hopkins ($8M), Diontae Johnson ($7M), and a familiar face, Marquez Valdes-Scantling (free agency). Together, these guys bring a combined contract value of $15M—just the kind of shake-up the KC team needs for their receiving corps. Clements revealed, “The receiver-depleted Chiefs haven’t been overly aggressive on the market to this point. As was told to me, coach Andy Reid values receivers who either have played in his system or know it well. Finding a plug-and-play situation isn’t always clear cut. That said, Kansas City will stay nimble.”

You see, the Chiefs have been playing it cool in the market. Reid likes to stick with WRs who know his system like the back of their hand. They wanted Hopkins (2023 free agency), but he’s pretty comfy in Tennessee—probably enjoying some hot beverages and Southern hospitality. Then there’s Carolina’s Johnson, who’d fit like a glove, but with a $7M base salary, the Panthers are playing hardball.

And let’s not forget about Valdes-Scantling! Kansas City released the WR earlier in Feb, saving about $12M in salary cap space. That move came after they revealed plans to franchise tag CB L’Jarius Sneed. That said—yes, the Chiefs are making some bold roster decisions, but we still don’t have anyone to catch passes from QB Mahomes moving forward.

With the KC team strutting into their Super Bowl rematch against the Niners with a perfect 5-0 record, excitement’s in the air. But again, there’s a growing frustration among fans about the team’s slow-motion approach to the trade market—especially after watching Davante Adams and Amari Cooper find new homes while they’ve been stuck in neutral.

At the end of the day, this comes after Andy Reid’s eyebrow-raising declaration that he probably won’t be signing a new WR for Patrick Mahomes.

Andy Reid weighs receiver options, but chemistry with Mahomes comes first

Have an interesting take?

When asked about the possibility of adding a fresh face to the receiving corps, HC Andy Reid didn’t slam the door shut—but left it ajar. He did mention the myriad challenges of integrating newcomers, saying, “I think that helped JuJu and his situation coming back in and jumping in. It helped Mecole coming back, but I’m not telling you other guys can’t come in and help out.”

Reid emphasized that any new addition would need time to sync up with their QB, which is something he ain’t too sure about. Right now, Kansas City’s riding with their current crew.

As the Chiefs gear up for their next clash with San Francisco (3-3), it’s evident that Reid’s banking on continuity over chaos. The Nov. 5 trade deadline’s looming—and the team’s yet to make a decision.

For now, the ball’s in their court, and Mahomes will need to rally his troops to keep this winning streak alive.
