Are the Browns making a mistake sticking with Deshaun Watson after that horrific game against the Giants?

$230 million for a quarterback? Sure, in today’s game, that’s not unheard of. But when your QB is struggling to show up on the gridiron, it feels like a pretty steep price tag, doesn’t it? Browns are currently facing the same debacle with Deshaun Watson’s ‘horrific’ outing against the Giants, as fans frustratingly put it.

Watson’s night took a rough turn as he got sacked for a career-high eight times—yikes! He managed to complete 21 of 37 passes for 196 yards and two touchdowns, but let’s be real, it felt like he was under siege the entire game. But the legendary Warren Moon, who became friends with Watson during his Texans days, chimed in, saying, “I think a lot of his problems are mental.”

When the pressure’s on, it’s tough to focus when you have so much swirling around you. And what’s adding to this mental strain? Well, while Watson reached settlements in most of his 22 lawsuits, the impact on his mental health lingers. Moon pointed out, “He’s still dealing with a lot of that crap… with the lawsuits and all that.”

It doesn’t sound too rogue now, does it? There’s a reason why his bad evenings on the gridiron are making such a noise. Watson arrived in the league as the 12th overall pick in 2017. The Texans had seen enough from the then-21-year-old college QB—fresh from tasting the NCAA Championship with Clemson—to draft him in their ranks.

And what had fate planned for him? Pro-bowl honors from 2018 to 2020, leading the league with the passing yards in 2020, and more. But what came as a sudden test was a series of s-xual assault charges in 2021. Sure, he tried to put the past behind him with a record trade to the Browns. However, he hasn’t been the same since.

What’s your perspective on:

Are the Browns making a mistake sticking with Deshaun Watson after that horrific game against the Giants?

Have an interesting take?

It’s like every time Watson steps onto the field, he’s playing with a weight on his shoulders. And it was evident during the Browns 15-21 loss to the Giants. Moon noted, “It seems like every time he goes out on the field he’s playing with a heavy mind.” And now, with the fans calling for him to get benched, how long will he be there in Cleveland?

Deshaun Watson’s not getting Dawg Pound’s sympathies!

Well, in the game ‘for’ the fans, Deshaun Watson’s losing his popularity. Social media lit up with even more dismay after the Browns fans had enough of Watson’s ‘horrific’ performance against the Giants. One NFL insider didn’t hold back, saying, “GM Joe Schoen will sleep easy tonight knowing there’s a worse QB contract than the one he gave out. Deshaun Watson is horrific!” Ouch. How would you feel if your team paid that much for this kind of performance?

Watson started strong, connecting with Amari Cooper for a 24-yard touchdown after a fumbled kickoff by the Giants. But that was it! After that opening drive, it felt like someone hit a pause. He held onto the ball too long, got sacked seven times (Oops!), and even fumbled one that led to a Giants touchdown. Expectedly so, fans didn’t hold back—the boos rang out, and social media exploded with frustration.

One reporter chimed in, “Man, are the boos LOUD for Deshaun Watson after that horrific throw to Jeudy.” Ouch! And let’s not forget Warren Sharp, who pointed out this is out in June. His post read that Watson is leading the league with a staggering 43.9% incompletion rate due to inaccurate passes. Is this really what a $230 million investment is showing on the field? Fans certainly don’t think so. One commented, “That Deshaun Watson trade may go down as an all-time worst trade.”

Another hopped on the hate train and wrote: “Deshaun Watson died on that massage table, this new dude is trash.” Calling him out for a streak of poor performances seems like the most common notion from fans. But you could say this fan took it up a notch when he wrote: “Deshaun Watson has to go. He f-cking sucks so bad.”

But it doesn’t stop there. The criticism kept rolling in, especially after that botched handoff to Jerome Ford. One fan hilariously noted, “Things I found out today: Deshaun Watson also cannot complete a handoff. Too high.” So, has he really run his time here in Cleveland or redemption season is on the cards? By fans’ reactions, it seems the prior’s more likely outcome, but you never know.
