Andy Reid and DeSean Jackson go way back. Their mutual admiration is no secret, and now Jackson’s latest move has Reid cheering louder than an Arrowhead crowd on game day. Jackson’s trading his playmaking days for play-calling, stepping in as Delaware State’s new head coach to replace Lee Hull. And if you’re wondering what Reid thinks about his former wideout turning into a head honcho, let’s just say he’s probably drawing up a celebratory cheeseburger play right now.
Well, given Reid’s role as a mentor to DeSean Jackson. The Chiefs’ head coach is more than happy that DeSean Jackson is starting a coaching career. And the man showed appreciation towards this move by calling out Jackson’s strong competitiveness. Andy Reid stated that this is a win-win situation for both Delaware and the former WR. The football team sorely needs a forward-thinking coach who can take a different approach to the game. And Jackson, well, with his experience it is certain that the man can do great at this role.
Andy Reid continued, “DeSean is like a son to me – a fierce competitor on the field, without rival, and a quality leader off of it. I could not be more supportive of his desire to coach Division I football and would stake my career on his success at Delaware State University. We are bound at the hip and are forever family. I cannot wait to see where he takes the University and where the University takes him.”

If you recall, the Eagles were a much bigger beast than they are now when they were led by Andy Reid. The current Chiefs head coach was with the Eagles from 1999 to 2012. During this time, he helped develop a number of outstanding players. One of those guys was DeSean Jackson. And the new Delaware head coach believes that due to Andy Reid, the man was able to achieve great things.
Jackson says Reid was not only helpful for on-field practice but also psychologically available to the WR. The former WR revealed, “First off, I’ve been coached by some great guys. I think Andy Reid yet alone is the best that’s been coaching me. I mean it’s a father figure. It was almost having a dad 2.0 to be able to coach, to be able to just command. He commands respect, he gave you hardship but at the same time he loved you.”
With this approach, DeSean Jackson has an excellent chance of turning the tables for Delaware. But how has the team fared throughout the years? Well, let’s just say it couldn’t be any worse. The Delaware State Hornets have won just two games in the previous two seasons. They finished the 2023 and 2024 seasons with a miserable 1-11 record. And perhaps Jackson’s inspiration from Andy Reid and a different approach will usher in a new era for the team.
