Hailing from a devoted Christian family, Roger Carr and Sheryl Carr are his parents. His parents instilled in him great lessons that reflected at every stage and eventually helped him succeed in getting into the NFL. The QB has stated that he’s strengthened and guided by his parents’ teachings, which also keeps him modest and grounded.

Derek was born in Fresno, California, as the youngest of three children to Roger Carr and Sheryl Carr. David and Darren are his two elder brothers, who have also played a significant role in shaping his football career. David, a former QB himself, has spent 12 years with the Texans, Panthers, 49ers, and the Giants. Currently, he works as an NFL analyst for the NFL Network in L.A. Plus, David studied at the Bakersfield Christian High School in California, where his dad Roger Carr served as a football coach.

Raiders QB Derek Carr says he learned that “my faith was No. 1” from his parents.

The Raiders’ QB acknowledged that he learned to put his faith first from his parents and that he used to refuse to play if a game fell on a Sunday when he was younger. In a conversation with “The High Note” podcast, he said, “I was raised in the church. My grandpa was a pastor, my uncle was a pastor, my other grandpa was a deacon, my dad was a deacon, my mom’s a worship leader, my grandma is a pastor.”

Derek further stated that his mum and dad have taught him that faith has to be No.1. As a kid, if he had a game on Sunday (which is Church-day), he would skip it. Explaining his parents’ impact on his growth, the Saints’ QB stated, “They made the priorities and it worked out for me; I made it to the NFL. So all these moms and dads that say, ‘No, we have to go to your games at 8 years old,’ you know, ‘it’s OK to miss one.’”

Carr’s spiritual journey did not end with his childhood. He attributes his acceptance of Jesus to Joel Osteen’s worship leader, Joel Wells, during his time in college. One other person highlighted as a source of continuing spiritual development is Pastor Mattie Montgomery of the Christian band For Today. Carr most recently related a story about how he felt led by God to pray for a female photographer at a golf tournament, illustrating how his faith still serves as a compass in his life.
