Several factors play a role in deciding the MVP. Similar vetting would also apply to Brock Purdy in the MVP race. But in his journey to MVP hopeful, Purdy had to stray away from the path his father had set for him. He did it with poise.

Purdy recently spoke about his inspiration growing up, among other things, ahead of the Baltimore Ravens game. Per his conversation, his not following his father’s words makes much more sense. Just after Christmas, the 49ers quarterback will go against another possible MVP contender, Lamar Jackson. Will he be able to keep his spot?

During a media interaction, a reporter asked Purdy about his childhood inspirations. The reporter thought Purdy idolized Dan Marino and sought clarity about his choice to have the Saints QB Drew Brees as his favorite. Purdy clarified and said that his father was a Dolphins fan and used to praise Dan Marino’s quick release, which, at the time, Purdy couldn’t master because he didn’t grow up watching Marino.

For the 49ers’ QB, Drew Brees was more relatable, majorly because he belonged to the same era. There is also a similar body structure, and Purdy’s respect for Brees’ quickness as a QB. Purdy substantiated his choice by pointing out how Drew Brees’ could expect throws and was quick with his feet. It was also because Drew Brees played with his mind and believed in fierce competition.

Purdy mentioned how his father tried to teach him to throw like Dan Marino, but ultimately, he idolized Drew Brees. “My Dad tried to teach me to throw like Dan Marino, and then I ended up loving Drew Brees,” added Purdy. A dive into Drew Brees’ career shows why Purdy idolizes him and clarifies the reason behind his success.

Purdy completed his 2022 season with 1,374 yards, but now, in the 2023 season, he is at 3,795 yards, which is only uphill from hereon. This is about a 276% improvement in his performance, with more room to get better. Will he be able to give a positive output against Lamar Jackson and the Ravens?

Can Purdy give the 49ers a much-needed edge for the playoffs?

The answer to this question will become apparent after the game against the Ravens. After a long time, the 49ers are going against a team with an exceptional track record and ruling a division, just like themselves. Both teams are 11-3 and are the strongest in the NFC West and the AFC North.

The Ravens have 0.786 PCT, and so do the 49ers. This is a challenging game to predict because, on paper, Purdy is way better than Lamar Jackson.

Lamar Jackson has a unique ability to play quickly and rush the ball. These are the things Brock Purdy lacks. To make up for it, the 49ers QB has George KittleDeebo SamuelChristian McCaffrey, and Brandon Aiyuk around him.
