Does Joe Burrow have the swagger to recreate Randy Moss's unforgettable fake moon celebration?

Celebrations during the games often get imprinted in history. No one can forget Joe Horn’s Calling God in 2003 and Steve Smith’s Love Boat in 2005. Randy Moss‘s Fake Moon celebration in 2005 ranks high among such celebrations. Guess what? Joe Burrow is bringing it back in 2024.

The QB revealed that he might taunt the away crowds in 2024. After the WR has approved of his plans, he looks ready to execute his plan. Let’s explore what both said about it.

He appeared on the Pardon My Take podcast on July 8, 2024. Hosts Dan ‘Big Cat’ Katz and Eric ‘PFT Commenter’ Sollenberger brought up Randy Moss’s ‘Fake Moon’ during the discussion. QB said that he might bring it back in 2024. He noted, “I think I might, maybe if I get a rushing touchdown this year. I might bring back the fake moon. It’s got to be on the road, though.” If you are wondering against which team he will do it, there’s a hint for you. PFT Commenter asked him to do it against the Pittsburgh Steelers, and ‘Joe Cool’ said ‘Okay.’ He told Big Cat that there had been games without any kind of tension (taunting) but those games did not excite him. Days later, he got the permission from the man himself.

Ross was surprised when Kay Adams revealed the QB’s plans to him during the ‘Up & Adams Show with Kay Adams‘ on July 16, 2024. The wide receiver approved Joe Cool’s plan but cautioned that it has to be the right situation and said, “Well, since you giving some love, I say do it but think about who is he going to do it against, the Packers. Well, if he, it has to be the right situation.” Ross liked Joe Cool’s idea of bringing it back.

Adams quickly asked if the QB should do it against the Baltimore Ravens, Moss pointed out that AFC North is a tough division and said, “Okay, that’s a rival, that’s rival, somebody in the division. I mean, that’s probably the toughest division in football. So, but back to that I think that you know just bringing something back and just paying homage to that. I mean I loved it cuz like I said when I done it was all in fun. And you know people took it out of context, so just bringing something back to create some more humor, I’d love to see it.

Indeed, it was an epic taunt when he showed his back to the Cheeseheads at Lambeau Field on January 5, 2005. The WR later disclosed that when he missed games due to a hamstring injury, the crowds often taunted him by carrying ‘Where you at, Moss” placards. So that was his way of trolling them after his second touchdown of the game. But the Minnesota Vikings traded him at the end of the 2005 season. Did the celebration play a part in that?

The WR is not the type to regret his decisions. Joe Cool uses his freedom of speech without the fear of any backlash. But, the NFL does not like such things on the field.

Will Joe Burrow put the Super Bowl at risk?

NFL fined Ross $10,000 for his controversial celebration against the Green Bay Packers. The WR trolled the NFL by saying, “Ain’t nothing but 10 grand. What’s 10 grand to me?” In 2023, Joe Burrow the QB became the highest-paid NFL player (annual salary-wise) after signing the $275 million contract extension with the Cincinnati Bengals. We can say that a fine would not affect him much, but the rules have gotten tougher and it can cost the team heavily.

NFL has put strict rules in place to avoid taunts. For one taunt, the 15-yard penalty rule comes into place which can change the result of the game. After the Ravens lost the AFC Championship game to the Kansas City Chiefs on January 28, 2024, when their rookie Zay Flowers was flagged for taunting the opposition, Joe Burrow showed his dissatisfaction and tweeted out “Let the Guys Taunt”. But he has certainly heated up the coming season.

Will the crowds retort? Will the NFL come up with tougher rules? Who Dey Nation will be looking for some epic showdowns on the gridiron?
