Darius and Chris Slayton: Which brother do you think will leave a bigger legacy in the NFL?

After signing his two-year contract extension last season with the Giants, Darius Slayton continues to live his NFL dream that started back in 2019. During his first season with the Giants, Darius went on to record 48 passes for 740 yards and 8 TDs. None of the other rookies that season were able to match Slayton’s TD passes, thereby showing his capabilities as WR.

Looking at Slayton’s ability as a proficient catcher, the Giants WR had his family to help him work out. Opening up about his first off-season program online, Slayton shared, “I started doing b— drills with my dad and my sister at the house with tennis-balls and stuff like that. It got pretty interesting sometimes. They got into it a little bit, and so definitely some of that stuff was a lot of fun.” Well, Slayton’s sister, Maileka, continues to share a strong bond with his brother.

Although she isn’t as popular as Darius, Maileka currently works for the Colorado Buffaloes Football as director of on-campus recruiting. But Maileka isn’t the only sibling Darius shares in his life, as the Giants WR also has a twin brother, Chris Slayton, who never wanted to play football before high school.

However, seeing his big build and potential to grow in the sport, Chris’s stepdad, Lem Slaughter, wanted him to try out football. Going back to his decision, Slaughter shared, “Football was all I knew. So I got all my boys into football.” But, the former Giants’ defensive end wanted to play QB, as throwing a football was everything that Chris knew about the game.

Well, Slayton’s coaches swiftly rejected that idea, seeing his massive frame while sending him to play on the defensive line. Within two years, Slayton saw himself lining up as a defensive end for Crete-Monee High School. Soon after, scrambling through multiple college offers, Slayton decided to join Syracuse.

Seeing his improvement, Slaughter expressed, “It was a shock for me to see him starting junior year. He went way beyond our expectations.” But when asked to explain their sons’ capabilities on the field, Slayton’s parents added, “He has that competitive edge in him.”Although Slayton enjoyed a massively successful Syracuse tenure, his NFL dream never really kick-started.

Soon after joining the Giants as their 245th overall pick in the 2019 NFL draft, Slayton was released next season. From then on, Darius Slayton’s twin brother went on to sign for the Bills, Falcons, Steelers, 49ers and Packers, but none of them materialized in Slayton’s joining the first team roster.

At the same time, Darius Slayton is entering his fifth season in the NFL while his parents and siblings continue to support him in this journey of pro football.

It was Slayton’s father, Eddie, who introduced Darius to the world of football. Eddie was the one who pushed his son to pursue football, seeing his potential from a young age. Darius and Eddie continue to share an unbreakable bond, as his father is responsible for managing his finances. Throughout the season, Slayton likes to maintain a low profile while keeping his family close in North Bergen.

Speaking about his family influence, Slayton added, “I always have my family on my mind every time I play. You’ve got to know what you represent because this game is hard. And it’s like: If you were doing this for yourself, you’re probably not going to keep taking this.” Well, Slayton’s love for football was there from a young age when he used to change his outfit after service at a church.

Recalling those childhood days, his father added, “He would always do a quick change and be the first one to the grass.” Even after Slayton became famous, he tried to maintain a down-to-earth attitude by avoiding the cameras in suburban Atlanta. His father used to say, “Son, put the smile on your face and be engaging. When the camera goes off, you can take the smile off and go back inside your head.”

Soon after, Slayton left Auburn and was picked by the Giants as their 171st pick in the 2019 NFL draft. Continuing to show his capabilities at MetLife Stadium, Slayton would be hoping he can live up to the expectations his family and siblings have poured into him.
