The QB situation in the New York Giants is becoming complex day by day. The NFL draft is approaching, and there’s speculation that the Giants not only want a quarterback but are also willing to trade up for one. So, does this mean Daniel Jones isn’t considered as the top choice as the team’s starter by the Giants?
The top pick, Caleb Williams, seems unlikely to be available. So, now the eyes are on Justin Fields from Bears, whose potential trade is also on this year’s NFL draft card. But will Fields replace Daniel Jones in an expected way, especially when they have a rather relatable label? Colin Cowherd has a major boost for Jones!
In a recent episode of The Herd with Colin Cowherd podcast, Cowherd and John Middlekauff discussed the NFL combine’s first two days in Indianapolis. During this segment, the Giants’ QB situation became a focal point of discussion. Cowherd, while recalling Mike Garafolo’s statement from NFL Network, expressed, “He believes the Giants will take a quarterback and then sit him behind Daniel Jones.

Cowherd further expressed, “And I made the argument earlier, Daniel Jones and Justin Fields, the only difference is one has an offensive coach and one has won a playoff game. They’re the same guy, they’re hurt too much, they’re inaccurate, they run but get sacked a lot. It’s weird. So, my take is the Giants are a fascinating team. They need a receiver, but it’s chock full, and I believe they have two second-round picks. There can be plenty of receivers.”
Middlekauff mentioned the pressure on the organization to be competitive this year, considering past coaching changes. They discussed the challenges in the NFC East and debated whether investing in a rookie quarterback or building more talent through the draft is the better strategy.
Middlekauff concluded that he thinks the coach of the Giants would definitely want more positioned players who can help win the team in the next season. But what if the Giants fail to secure a QB in the draft?

There could be a twist in Giants’ draft prospects
Earlier it was rumored that the Giants could pivot and draft a receiver to aid quarterback Daniel Jones. Now, the NFL reporter, Connor Hughes, hinted at a possibility. Hughes expressed, “The worst-kept secret of the NFL Combine might not just be the Giants’ desire to select a quarterback in the upcoming NFL draft, but their willingness to trade up to go get a quarterback in this year’s draft.”

He highlighted the uncertainty around acquiring quarterback Caleb Williams and mentioned the unlikelihood of the Bears trading the number 1 selection or keeping Justin Fields. The focus is on the Giants’ need for a quarterback, contemplating whether they will trade up or choose another quarterback like Bo Nix or Michael Penix Jr.
In the absence of a suitable quarterback, Hughes suggests the team might pivot towards selecting a receiver, specifically emphasizing LSU’s Malik Nabers as a potential no. 1 receiver for the Giants.
