After just three days of excitement, Dan Quinn’s Washington Commanders have some major news that’s got fans buzzing. The team might soon hold practices at what could become their new permanent home. Sources say only a few final approvals are needed before the transition can move forward.

This signals a potential new era for the franchise, both on and off the field. The Commanders are working to build their new home at the RFK Stadium site, a 174-acre campus. According to sources, “The Commanders and D.C. Council are planning to announce a deal to build the team’s next stadium at the derelict RFK Stadium site on the Anacostia waterfront.” This news has the football world buzzing as the Commanders prepare to build their new home.

Word is, the Washington team is dropping a whopping $2.5 billion on a brand-new stadium, and the district’s chipping in $850 million to help make it happen. For ages, the team’s been playing at Griffith Stadium in Northwest D.C., which has been known as RFK Stadium since the 1960s. So, when’s this new stadium actually going to be ready, though?

The Commanders‘ owner, Josh Harris, has said that he wants the stadium to be completed by 2030. Actually, to do this, the Commanders hired a well-known real estate executive to their front office two months ago. NFL reporter Nicki Jhabvala broke the news on X two months ago, posting: “The Commanders hired former JBG Smith executive vice president Andy VanHorn as their head of real estate.” He will look after the real estate-related complexities of Dan Quinn’s team.

Washington DC Mayor to fulfill Dan Quinn’s Commanders’ dream

The Washington Post also reported additional details of the proposed arrangement, which still requires formal approval by D.C. authorities. The Commanders’ principal owner, Josh Harris, and Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser will publicly announce these details during a joint press conference on Monday. This marks a significant step forward in the ongoing negotiations regarding the team’s future in the city.

According to reports, this deal is huge for the Commanders. It’s a return to what the team calls their ‘spiritual home,’ which is a big deal for the franchise. On top of that, it’s a major step toward the shiny new stadium Harris hopes to open by 2030. Right now, Dan Quinn and the crew are still playing at Northwest Stadium, but the current deal only lasts until 2027. So, while they’ve got some time, they’re already looking to the future.

The Commanders can stay at Northwest Stadium until 2027 — but there’s a catch. If construction takes longer, they’ll stick around until the new stadium is ready. So, Washington fans, we might be waiting until 2030 to see Jayden Daniels and the Commanders in their brand-new, picture-perfect home.
