Is Dak Prescott really the future of the Cowboys, or should they consider new talent like Shedeur Sanders?

With CeeDee Lamb’s contract all wrapped up for the Cowboys, the attention moves towards Dak Prescott’s contractual situation. The ninth-year Pro enters his final year of a four-year deal signed back in 2021. The Cowboys would be hoping the QB that led the NFL in touchdown passes one year ago puts ink to the paper for extending his stay in AT&T stadium.

But amid Dak Prescott’s contractual talks, former NFL general manager Mike Tannenbaum predicted something that could seem impossible in current circumstances. Speaking on Get Up ESPN, Tannenbaum stated, “There’s a better chance, in my opinion, that Shedeur Sanders could be the quarterback for the Cowboys next year than Dak Prescott at this point.” Well, it is too good to be true, as former NFL QB Dan Orlovsky was quick to shut down the rumors.

Taking to his X handle, Orlovsky tweeted, “Let’s start the season before we start this game. Also, Dallas would have to trade way up to get Sanders (unless disaster strikes).” But the Cowboys aren’t in a position to move up the 2025 NFL draft, considering their current options. With Prescott playing for them, they would be languishing in the bottom half of the draft. Meanwhile, Sanders is projected to be among the first QBs slated for selection in the first round itself.

Playing for the Colorado Buffaloes on their opening night, the son of Deion Sanders had an explosive start to his season. Sanders led the Buffaloes to record a 31-26 win against the North Dakota State while racking up 26-0f-34 for 445 yards, 4 TDs, and just one interception. However, there could be a way the Cowboys could bring Sanders to the fold, as Tannenbaum offered his thoughts on the same.

By sending CeeDee Lamb to a different franchise, the Cowboys could end up going up the NFL draft ladder to get their hands on the rookie. But it seems impossible, as Lamb recently agreed to a $136 million deal, thereby putting an end to his long-standing contractual hold-out. Even trading Dak Prescott in this year’s NFL draft could have opened the way for Dallas to sign Sanders.

However, looking at the current situation, Prescott is set to hit unrestricted free agency next season. With hopes of getting his side of the deal by going to a different franchise. At the same time, Jerry Jones continues to find a solution that can keep Prescott at the Cowboys while finding a way to get young talent like Sanders on the roster.

Will Dak Prescott sign his contract extension with the new season slated to begin next week?

As the Cowboys prepare for their regular season starter against the Cleveland Browns, Prescott was asked about his thoughts on the contract negotiations. Sharing his views, the All-Pro stated, “I think it says a lot if it is or if it isn’t. But, however, it doesn’t really matter to me, to be honest with you.”

Even Jones was tapped for his thoughts regarding the chances of Prescott signing his extension, “You could easily say. If you haven’t seen it by now, you haven’t seen it. I am such a fan of Dak’s and appreciate all of the great things that we all know that is there.” Well, Prescott has been a huge contributor to the Cowboys’ offense, as he finished last season with 4,516 passing yards and just nine interceptions to his name. Therefore, a deal for him right now would make sense for all the parties involved.

Understanding Jones’s way of dealing with contracts, Prescott replied, “Yeah, I mean, I stopped, honestly, listening to things that he says to the media a long time ago. Doesn’t really hold weight with me.” With Jordan Love, Joe Burrow, and Trevor Lawrence all signing their lucrative contracts, Prescott would be hoping he finds himself in a similar position based on the performances he offers.

Speaking about his approach to the season, the Dallas QB added, “You gotta love it. You gotta embrace it. That’s the challenge. We, as the players and the coaches, don’t have the full say in whether we’re here or not. It’s about sticking together. Yeah, it’s now.” But as things stand, this might be the last year Prescott can be seen starting at AT&T Stadium. With neither party willing to budge on their stance, the Cowboys would have a lot of thinking to do as they prepare for the regular season.
