While the Detroit Lions have maintained the tradition of hosting Thanksgiving Day games since 1934, the recent history has been less than ideal for their fans. The team has faced challenges on this holiday, losing the last six Thanksgiving games and 15 out of the last 19. However, this year seems to bring a shift in fortunes.

Lions’ head coach Dan Campbell said, “We’ve said all along that we want the community, the environment to be we’re all in it, right? We’re all in this together. We all feel it together and I feel like that’s about where we’re at.” Furthermore, he continued, “We’re winning some games. We’re giving our fans something to be proud of and we got to do that again.

The Thanksgiving record of the Detroit Lions

The tradition of the Detroit Lions playing on Thanksgiving is deeply ingrained in the fabric of the holiday. Year after year, the NFL has consistently featured the Lions in one of the three games scheduled for Thanksgiving, thus making it a consistent and cherished ritual. This inadvertent tradition adds a unique element to the holiday for the Lions fans. This season marks their 22nd meeting on this cherished holiday.

In this aspect, the Lions hold more experience in the competition compared to the Packers. Despite Detroit’s impressive start to the season, they face a longstanding challenge–overcoming the Thanksgiving hump. Since their victorious 2016 Thanksgiving game against the Minnesota Vikings with a score of 16-13, the Lions have faced defeat in every Thanksgiving Day game. Over these years, the Lions have a dull 37-44-2 record on Thanksgiving.
