Is Dan Campbell's support for Goff after 5 picks a bold move or a big mistake?

In all honesty, Jared Goff was an eyesore to watch going against the Houston Texans‘ defense. Don’t know what’s worse, Jared Goff throwing 5 interceptions or the Houston Texans failing to capitalize on that opportunity. The Houston team blew up 16 point lead. What a disaster. If it wasn’t for Jake Bates, Amon-Ra St. Brown, and the Lions‘ defense, the team would have been cooked.

Still, Dan Campbell, who preaches comradery is practicing what he’s preaching to the locker room. He decided to stick with Goff after his abysmal performance. The Lions have improved to 8-1, but they have a lot to think about before they go against the Jacksonville Jaguars.  Let’s see what Dan Campbell has to say about Jared Goff’s 5 pick performance.

Brad Galli, the sports coordinator at WXYZ Detroit TV reported that the Lions head coach was fine with the four interceptions that Goff threw. But one of them stuck out like a sore thumb. He didn’t say which one but check out what Campbell said in the postgame presser after the 26-23 win.

“For me, I’m not going to tell him anything,” Campbell said. “These weren’t ill-advised throws.” Maybe he was talking about the fifth interception that Goff threw on a pass intended for Jameson Williams. The Lions were down by 13-23 when the interception occurred, with just 8:24 remaining in the third quarter.

It’s crazy to think how a week ago, Jared Goff was taking the MVP race by storm and had only four interceptions in the 8 games he’s played prior to the win against the Houston Texans. But regardless of the eyesore performance, Jared Goff has now completed 200 touchdowns in the NFL. It’s astonishing to see how the Lions can still win games while playing the most abhorrent game of the season.

If the Lions defense didn’t perform the way they did, this game would have been a lost cause.

The defense covered up Jared Goff’s mess-up

Was it a coincidence that the defense came up with an interception just when Dan Campbell talked about it on the sideline? If that’s not divine timing, what is? But thanks to Carlton Davis III Dan Campbell’s manifestation came true. Davis III recorded two interceptions in total. The defense, however, sacked CJ Stroud 4 times and recorded 49 solo tackles, way more than the Texans.

Here’s what Dan Campbell said before Carlton Davis III’s miraculous interception: “Listen, we have one error here or there. If we cut that out we’ll be fine,” Dan Campbell said on the NBC broadcast. “And then we gotta have takeaways. Our defense has to get a couple of takeaways. We’re not gonna get it all at one chunk here. So just one at a time, we’ll do that. We’ll play this out ’till we get two minutes left in the fourth quarter before we turn on, but we’ll do it.”

Chris Collinsworth, who was announcing the game couldn’t believe the timing of the pick and pointed out the obvious: This has never happened in the history of the sport. Probably because the NFL has mandated the head coach, or someone from the coaching staff to give a sideline interview starting this season.
