Dan Campbell doesn’t believe in coasting, not even when the playoff spot seems secured. His decision to play starters in a game many deemed “meaningless” proved his commitment to building momentum.

“To come out to the scene of the crime and get it done, it does give you some satisfaction,” Campbell said after avenging last season’s NFC Championship game loss against San Francisco. Detroit’s 40-34 win in the MNF improved their record to an impressive 14-2. However, the game didn’t impact playoff standings. The Vikings’ victory over the Packers earlier had solidified it already. Despite this, Campbell stuck to his guns, playing starters and beefing Detroit’s road dominance with an 8-0 record moving into the postseason.

Campbell explained his rationale in the post-game press conference, emphasizing fairness and preparation. Cambell said he did think about benching the starters after the Vikings game. But then he changed his mind. “It’s not fair to ask [young] guys to play that haven’t been prepared to play,” he said. “I ended up settling on the right thing to do… play these guys [starters].” His stance highlighted Detroit’s all-in mentality.

Well, looking at the game, they certainly needed all the big guns. The 49ers were leading in the 3rd quarter 28-21. Jake Bates guided them to a lead with 2 field goals. QB Jared Goff played his role with 303 yards and 3 TDs.

The Lions now face the Vikings in a Week 18 matchup for the NFC’s top seed. Campbell’s decision to field starters against the 49ers could give Detroit an edge. As it kept their key players sharp for the high-stakes finale. Momentum matters and Campbell clearly values it.

However, not everyone agrees with the strategy. Penei Sewell’s thumb injury, although minor, raised concerns about risking key players before crucial games.

Sewell left for the locker room before halftime against San Francisco, sparking worry among fans. However, the Lions’ star right tackle returned to finish the game. Dan Campbell praised Sewell’s toughness after the game, reassuring fans that his availability for Week 18 isn’t in jeopardy. “It’s going to take a whole hell of a lot to keep him from suiting up,” Campbell noted confidently. He also eased fears about the injury, saying, “[He] should be good.”

Still, the injury reignited debates over the wisdom of playing starters in a relatively inconsequential game. Critics questioned if the risk was worth it with the division title and NFC top seed at stake next week. Had Sewell’s injury been severe, Campbell’s decision would’ve faced harsher scrutiny.

For now, Detroit will shift focus to their Sunday night clash against Minnesota. Sewell’s status will be monitored closely, as Campbell noted. “His status will be one to monitor over the course of the week.” But all signs point to him leading the offensive line charge.
