Feels like it’s been forever since the Dallas Cowboys last snagged a Super Bowl win. Since that 1995 glory, the Cowboys haven’t even won a conference championship—Super Bowl dreams feel pretty far off right now. In these three decades, Brian Schottenheimer has been the ninth head coach that Jerry Jones has brought on board. There are certain reasons for this decision. For starters, the QB, Dak Prescott, likes Schottenheimer’s creativity in the offense, and he desires continuity in the O-line. So, what are Prescott’s views over the new head coach?
As it turns out, Jerry Jones granted his wish. But the question is, what will Schottenheimer bring as a head coach? Well, the HC has an answer for you. “I’m good with X’s and O’s, but I’m great with people,” he stated. Wanna know what the QB has to say on this statement? “Yes sir,” Prescott stated. That’s it. Just a two-word remark.

Looks like the QB and HC are gearing up to make some noise and change the game. After all, it was Schottenheimer who really turned the Cowboys’ offense around in 2023. Under Schottenheimer’s tenure as an OC, Dak Prescott hit a career-high 69.5% completion rate, throwing for 4,516 yards, 36 touchdowns, and just nine interceptions. On top of that, the team ranked fifth in total offense and first in scoring. Oh, and let’s not forget—the QB led the squad to the NFC East title.
Now, let’s shift our attention to the X’s and O’s. Well, the head coach already opened up on modernizing the team’s offense, with his cut splits, shifts, and motions to distort things. Let’s not sugarcoat it. There’s no denying that the Cowboys need a strategy for the O-line if they really want to end their 30-year drought of Super Bowl. For that, they surely need to play some mind games with the opponent’s defense. And that’s what the head coach is planning to do here.
On the other hand, Schottenheimer has a good relationship with the players, especially with Prescott. Because, of course, the guy was the offensive coordinator of the team. But let’s be real. The head coach coming up with some new strategies is the biggest concern for the Cowboys and the QB. I mean, will Jerry Jones allow Schottenheimer to implement some new ideas? Well, the question is still hanging in the air.
Indeed, it was a risky decision
Alright, let’s get straight to it. After interviewing a bunch of candidates, Jerry Jones finally picked his OC to take the reins. Some fans are already calling it a terrible decision, while others see it as a bold gamble. But ask the man himself because he’s calling it a big risk.“If you don’t think I can operate outside my comfort zone, you are so wrong,” Jones stated in the first press conference after the hiring. “This (hiring Schottenheimer) is as big a risk as you can take. No head coaching experience.”

He dropped that line after pointing out that Schottenheimer’s deep knowledge of the organization was a big reason behind the decision to bring him on board. But he’s still calling it a big risk. What does he actually want to convey? Because Brian Schottenheimer is in the league for 25 years now as a coach. He surely has a 14-years of experience as an OC but as a head coach? Zero Zip Nada! That’s one of the biggest worries for the Cowboys right now.
But the truth is, Jerry Jones likes Schottenheimer’s baggage, and he likes his experience. Period! That appears to be the sole reason for this hiring.”How often do you have a chance to take advantage of all of that at 50 years old—which is a puppy,” Jones said. “Yet he’s had 25 years being around the kinds of things that he’s gonna have to draw on to be a coach of the Dallas Cowboys.”

With his trust in the head coach’s experience, Jerry Jones believes that the Dallas Cowboys are still poised for a Super Bowl run. That’s not all. Despite being a big risk, the head coach stated that he wants to build a strong culture within the team and his clear goal is to win the Super Bowl. And their QB, Dak Prescott, is in tune with that. Guess we’ll have to wait a whole year to find that out.
