The Dallas Cowboys fans became apprehensive of Jerry Jones’ “all in” approach after the team had an underwhelming drafting. Added to that, the Cowboys addressed their running back position by signing Ezekiel Elliott again. This implies the owner’s decision to be frugal about the spending that his team is doing and also raises questions about their standing on QB Dak Prescott.
Post draft, Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero released a story that gained some traction on the internet. Following the publication, the NFL insiders came to The Rich Eisen Show and briefly spoke about the Cowboys’ drafting situation. Their analysis of the owner’s actions seems pretty spot-on but also forces the viewers to think about how the team’s veterans would be taken care of in the future.

Pelissero pointed out how the Cowboys needed to address the vacant positions of their left tackle, center, and pass rushers. He wanted to know Rapoport’s point of view about where the Cowboys stood in the 2024 off-season. Rapoport pointed out that whatever the Cowboys have done leading up to this point is “pretty normal” for them.
“I mean to me it’s a pretty normal offseason and I know that sounds weird because everybody is losing their damn minds about how they didn’t sign anyone, but this is kind of what the Cowboys do. They draft, they develop, they get very good players, they pay them a lot of money, their own players usually and they don’t sign a ton of free agents,” said Rapoport.
“I don’t know how many holes they have as a roster. They just did it in a way that everybody would like to, because you’d like to draft guys, develop them, pay the really good ones, let the ones who are just pretty good go to get overpaid in free agency, replace them with younger guys who are also very good but much cheaper and then do the cycle all over again,” added the reporter.
The statement about being “overpaid” is a strong reminder of where Dak Prescott might be in the next season, especially after Jerry Jones revealed his plan.
This might be it for Dak Prescott with the Cowboys!
It seems like Prescott might have some future planning to do after all. One thing is for sure, the 81-year-old Cowboys owner is looking for younger players to fill the quarterback position and already has Trey Lance in his mind as Prescott’s successor. He said it in the post-draft presser.
“We think Lance is a good addition. Trey Lance to um looking ahead at having uh addressing the quarterback position depth otherwise. I’ve got it right here again, got him right here in this draft as though uh he were a draft pick for us,” said Jones and added about the fact of moving on more the veterans of the team.

Cowboys EVP Stephen Jones on @1053thefan on QB Trey Lance: “He’s done nothing but excite us even more as he’s worked here all of last season and in the offseason, in terms of his work ethic, his skill level. We’re very pleased.

He added further, “But there’s a lot of young players here. We had about a handful of them last year that didn’t play or get to play, meet expectation. They got to come on so that when you see us rolling off, I don’t want to be elementary here, but when you see us rolling off of some of our great names of guys that have been here ten years, nine years…”

Recently, the Cowboys’ executive VP Stephen Jones praised Trey Lance’s work ethic in the off-season and mentioned how the team was “very pleased” with his efforts. Stephen Jones talked to The Athletic and said, “He exhibits everything you would think a top-five, top-10 pick would exhibit. … Trey exhibits a similar type work ethic [to Prescott].”
All of these dialogues strongly corroborate the fact the Cowboys appear ready to move on from Dak Prescott at the moment and we might see him play for a different team next year.
