This is Dak Prescott’s last season currently with the Dallas Cowboys as they failed to offer him an extension. SI dubbed it as “Jerry Jones flirting with disaster.” For all we know, that analogy might turn out to be true for the Dallas team. Because if Prescott leaves next season, the chances of the Cowboys making it to the playoffs will become abysmally lower than where they stand at the moment.
Prescott signed a 4-year $160 million extension in 2020 and despite the last season being the best of his tenure, the Cowboys haven’t revealed an updation in the same this year. To weigh in on the situation, Adam Schefter appeared on the Pat McAfee show, discussing the implications of Prescott leaving the Cowboys. Meanwhile, heads also turn to owner Jerry Jones’ reflection on the same.

Schefter pointed out that the Dallas Cowboys came late to Dak Prescott’s extension party and now it’s too late to rectify the situation. If the QB leaves the richest sports franchise, he has no shortage of teams in need of a QB for him next season. The NFL reporter pointed out that teams like the Giants and the Panthers fall under the criteria of being quarterback-needy. But the point remains that Prescott departing from the Dallas team would leave them with $95 million in dead cap, which would be the highest in NFL history.
"The Cowboys are in a situation with Dak Prescott going into the last year of his deal..
If he leaves after this year the dead money cap charge is $95M that they'd have to spread out..
If he becomes a free agent next year there will be no shortage of suitors" ~ @AdamSchefter pic.twitter.com/pP0o64vDHp

“The time to do a deal with Dak was before free agency and they didn’t do that so there was no caps saying so they wanted to get some of these more key free agents that are out they’re gone, they’re off the street,” said Schefter giving an insight into the Cowboys’ situation.
Schefter added, “So now there in a situation with Dak going into the last year of his deal he’s got a $55 million cap number if he leaves after this year the dead cap money charges $95 million that they’re going to spread out.”
Per Schefter, Prescott leaving the Cowboys would only make him even more money, because the cap space is supposed to increase in the next off-season as well. He added how the interest in Prescott would be more next year, with the Cowboys bearing most of the burden. Schefter quoted Dak to be the “2024-25 version of Kirk Cousins,” highlighting the kind of loss Cowboys would be committing to. However, despite all these conversations, owner Jerry Jones remains to be cryptic about the situation.

On several occasions, we’ve seen Jerry Jones backing Dak Prescott for better and worse. But according to Ian Rapoport’s report, Jones’ patience is exhausted, and he is giving mixed signals about the QB. The owner’s stance on Prescott’s contract stems from a mutual understanding, per the NFL insider.
The #Cowboys and QB Dak Prescott have a mutual understanding of his contract situation, sources say, with no offers from Dallas despite him being in a contract year. Owner Jerry Jones said, “We are where we are, locked and loaded for this year.”

“We are where we are, locked and loaded for this year,” admitted Jerry Jones about Dak Prescott. But if Jones is not extending Prescott’s contract on the grounds of him not winning a playoff game, it should be noted that the Cowboys have only 5 playoff victories since winning the SB back in 1996. Hence, the problem might not be with Prescott as it is reflected to be in some scenarios.
