Is it fair to bench Fields after his stellar performance in Wilson's absence?

Seems like Justin Fields’ hot streak with the Steelers this season is over, as Russell Wilson nears full recovery ahead of this week’s clash against the Jets. It could be pretty harsh considering the way Fields led the Steelers in the absence of Wilson as he dealt with a calf injury. Although he was the designated starter, having joined the Steelers this season, his calf injury limited him to only preseason appearances wearing black and gold.

HC Mike Tomlin gave an update on Tuesday, “Wilson is in consideration this week. We’ll see where that leads us.” From the moment Tomlin gave a timeline to Wilson’s return, rumors have started to fly around Pittsburgh regarding Fields getting benched in week 7. Even the 25-year-old was disappointed seeing him possibly make way for Russ, “I don’t think I played good enough if I’m being real with you. If I’m being real with myself, if I did play well enough. I don’t think there would be any sort of question who should be playing who should not.”

Well, for the six games he has played in the absence of Wilson, Fields has racked up a passer rating of 93.9%. This comes on the back of a single interception amid the 66.3% of passes he completed within those six games. Adding to those numbers are his 1,106 yards and five TDs that have brought the Steelers 4 wins this season.

Even last week, when the Steelers were coming out of two straight losses against the Colts and Cowboys, Fields was instrumental in their victory over the Raiders. He completed 14-of-23 passes for 145 yards while adding two TDs to his name. Seeing Fields perform the way he has been, Tomlin didn’t shy away from singing his praises. “Justin has been really good, and we’ve been really good at times. But not to be confused with great. Man, this is a competitive league. We’re trying to position ourselves to be that team, and we got a player with talent who hadn’t had an opportunity to play, so we’re going to potentially explore those things.”

Rightfully pointed out by Tomlin, the Steelers have often struggled in certain departments where Wilson’s experience as a 9-time Pro Bowler could be handy.

Can Russell Wilson make the Steelers a sizeable threat after Justin Fields’ takeover?

Have an interesting take?

Tomlin has often been skeptical whenever it came to addressing the QB debate in Pittsburgh. After the Raiders game, when the 52-year-old was asked whether Wilson possesses the same running capability as Justin, he said, “No, he does not. Justin’s legs are an X factor.” Well, the coach wasn’t the only person who spoke highly of Fields’ running game as left tackle Dan Moore said, “When you’ve got a guy like that can make plays with his feet, it takes pressure off to us. We give up pressures and sack situations that he can get out of and not only extend plays but make plays of it. It helps us out tremendously.”

However, the Steelers are struggling in their passing yards per yardage (166.8) as they currently find themselves 28th among the 32 teams in the NFL. Even in terms of scoring games, there are problems, as the Steelers rank 20th for their 20.7 points per game. So the question is, can Wilson’s deep throw capabilities and downfield attacks help the Steelers boost their passing game if he does take over? Well, Tomlin also spoke about the experience that Wilson could bring once he recovers, “There’s also a totality of his resume as well that makes you more comfortable than guys with shorter resumes in that regard in terms of his ability to play ball on a limited amount of exposure.”

For now, we don’t know whether Wilson can handle the starting berth coming off a calf injury that sidelined him for six weeks. But the experience he boasts around his arm could help the Steelers up their game if he does start against the Jets next week.
