The Cowboys were one of the stronger teams in the 2023 season. And they raised everyone’s hopes by marching confidently up to the playoffs. And then all effort failed, as they fell to the Green Bay Packers in the Wild Card Round itself. If they hadn’t, they would have been just two steps away from their first Super Bowl appearance in almost 30 years!

It’s clear that there are problems within the franchise. In the latest episode of First Take, Stephen A. Smith highlights how the Cowboys missed the opportunity to do better in the 2024 season.

Stephen blasts Jerry Jones for missing out on Bill Belichick

Stephen A. Smith laid out a compelling argument. The Dallas Cowboys missed a golden opportunity by not bringing Bill Belichick on board. “They should have hired Bill. Not that Mike McCarthy should have been fired because they lost a playoff game to Green Bay, none of that. Mike McCarthy should have been gone because a six-time Super Bowl champion was on the market, who is the antithesis of everything that goes on in Dallas right now,” he said.

According to Smith, it wasn’t merely about the Cowboys’ playoff defeat to Green Bay. The actual issue, he asserted, lay in the fact that a coach of Belichick’s caliber, a strategist with six Super Bowl victories under his belt, was available. Does that mean he thinks Mike McCarthy is incapable of leading the Cowboys? He disagreed. He just wants Bill Belichickover McCarthy not because Mike is bad, but because Bill is better.

Smith is sending out a clear message to Jerry Jones: the Cowboys need a figure like Belichick to “discipline” the team. The absence of such leadership will continue to cost Dallas dearly. And it’s not like the Cowboys just have an HC problem to address. There is also the QB question. And Stephen weighed in on that as well.

Do the Cowboys have an option?

Dak Prescott has recorded an impressive resume: three Pro Bowl appearances, a spot on an NFL All-Pro team, the AP Offensive Rookie of the Year title, and five playoff campaigns. However, the journey hasn’t been without its bumps. The Cowboys have yet to advance to an NFC championship game under Prescott’s guidance. And his playoff record stands at a below-average 2-5.

ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky voiced a bold opinion on First Take, suggesting the Cowboys should undergo a major overhaul. Following the crushing loss to Green Bay, Orlovsky advocated for starting anew, including making changes at both the QB and HC positions. Stephen A. Smith took a different stance. “I’m saying to myself, OK if I get rid of him who am I going to get in return for him? Who’s the answer? You have to think like that D.O. because the point is somebody has to play quarterback.”
