The Cowboys’ backup QB spot has been a wild game of musical chairs lately. One minute it’s Andy Dalton stepping in, the next it’s Cooper Rush saving the day when Dak Prescott needed a breather. Even last season, Rush kept things from falling apart when Prescott had his off days. But now? He’s packed his bags for Baltimore, leaving Jerry Jones and Dallas with a big, blinking question mark at QB2.

But let’s be real—Jerry Jones isn’t the type to sit back and hope for the best. Prescott’s future in 2025 is still up in the air, but JJ has a lot of other concerns for their QB drama. If Prescott won’t be fit by September this year, who’s going to be the backup QB to lead the O-line? Rush won’t be there, for sure. That left Jerry Jones and Co. to look towards the NFL draft.

That’s where the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport comes in. On Tuesday, Rapoport predicted that Dallas may draft a QB to back up Prescott. Stick with us because that’s where things get interesting. Rapoport believes that Cooper Rush is going to be a solid backup for the Ravens in 2025. However, Rush won’t be the backup to Prescott, so it makes things more interesting for the Cowboys.

You see, Prescott’s locked in with the Cowboys till 2028, and honestly, it wouldn’t be surprising if he sticks around even longer. But the big question’s still looming over everyone’s heads: who’s going to back up Prescott? Well, Rapoport believes that a rookie QB could be a better option. “You obviously have Dak Prescott as the starter, he has a huge deal that he’s under contract with for several years. But this to me says the Cowboys are going to go quarterback in the draft,” he said.

However, Rapoport’s major concern is how early the Cowboys are going to go for a QB in the draft as he further added, “I wonder how high are they going to go? I would be surprised at this point if they take a quarterback in the first round. I think everybody would.” Now, that’s the question worth asking. Because the thing is Jerry Jones isn’t just looking for a backup.

Oh no! You can just say that the Cowboys are probably looking for a QB who’s talented enough to be a starting QB in a few years—at least that’s what Rapoport has in his mind. His prediction? It’s the Texas Longhorns’ QB, Quinn Ewers. The kicker? Ewers is projected to be selected in the second round.

“But what if someone’s like, I don’t know, Quinn Ewers is in the second round? A quarterback who’s really talented, who they know well, who might not have to play for a couple of years, but in three years might end up being someone who’s certainly talented enough to be the starting quarterback,” he further added. Well, if Ewers’ stats have taught us anything, then the guy could be the right fit for the Cowboys.

What’s your perspective on:

Could Quinn Ewers be the future star the Cowboys desperately need, or just another draft gamble?

Have an interesting take?

The 22-year-old QB is entering the NFL draft after recording 3,472 yards with 31 passing touchdowns and 12 picks for the Longhorns in 2024. Plus, Ewers has an interesting connection with the team considering the guy worked out with the former Cowboys’ HC, Mike McCarthy. So yeah, if Jerry Jones could draft Ewers in the draft, it’s likely the guy could replace Dak Prescott in the coming years…say three or maybe four years.

But the real question: how high the Cowboys will go? Because let’s be real—the Cowboys are far behind in drafting Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders in the first draft. Plus, Quinn Ewers is projected to be drafted in the second round. There you go. It’s the second round then. Because if the Cowboys wait for the fifth or sixth round, they’re surely not going to get a talented QB. Geez! It’s better to say that by the fifth or sixth round, they all may be gone.

That said, Rapoport believes that Dallas is surely going to draft a QB in the draft. Whether it’s in early rounds or late rounds—we’ve no clue. But one thing’s for sure: Cooper Rush won’t be in Dallas to step up if Prescott gets injured.

Cooper Rush: A new backup to Lamar Jackson

The NFL sure knows how to serve up some moments that just make you shake your head and laugh. On one side, we have a couple of teams who have been looking for a franchise QB for years or struggling with a QB curse. While on the other, we have the Baltimore Ravens who already had the two-time MVP, Lamar Jackson on their roster, and now Cooper Rush joined the party as QB2.

If there’s one thing John Harbaugh and the Ravens have had a tough time with, it’s finding a solid backup for Jackson. See it this way: ever since the 2022 season-ending, Jackson never missed out on a game due to an injury. But what about the games he really missed out on? Yeah, that’s the tricky part. Because the Ravens are 4-10, including playoffs over the last six seasons in that category.

Enter Cooper Rush to Baltimore and looks like the team might get a perfect QB1 for Jackson. According to the team’s official source, the Ravens signed Rush on a two-year $6.2 million deal with $4.2 million guaranteed. Well, that’s a good deal for someone who just recorded the best season of his career.

In Prescott’s absence, Rush started 8 games out of 12 and posted career highs in passing yards (1,844) and touchdowns (12). Rush will now replace the 38-year-old Josh Johnson who appeared in three games last season. Sure, Rush’s departure from Dallas left the Cowboys looking for a backup. But one thing’s certain: the Ravens probably solved their backup QB issues ahead of the 2025 campaign.
