The Cowboys are on the verge of losing America’s Team,” argued Cowboys legend, Michael Irvin, over the state of affairs at the franchise. 3 decades, no NFC championship. No Super Bowl. And still the owner, Jerry Jones, isn’t ready to accept that they need a major rebuild. After Mike McCarthy parted ways with the franchise, they had a thorough search. The end result? Same we have seen over the years. The owner is the GM as well, and he promoted his OC, Brian Schottenheimer, to the head coach. It miffed the legend.

During the January 27 episode of FS1’s Speak show, he used a unique comparison to school Jerry Jones. While talking about the changes in the world around ourselves, he said, “I use the reality, empires do fall. Sears and Robux used to own everything, but they wouldn’t take all of their items out of that little book and put it on the internet. Oh, you could have been Amazon before Amazon, but you were too damn rigid to move, and now you’re gone. Blockbuster was the same way. You could have beaten Netflix to Netflix, but you was too rigid. And right here, the Cowboys stayed rigid. And rigid is not good because you’re not flexible.” That’s right. Maybe Jeff Bezos could give a lesson or two to the Cowboys owner. They last won the Super Bowl and NFC Championship in 1995.

The shift is massive. They are the world’s biggest and first sports franchise to be valued at over $10 billion. But things can go downhill if Jerry Jones doesn’t take quick firm action. While Irvin claimed 40 years to be a generation, 30 years isn’t a lesser time. There are millions of fans who grew up but haven’t seen a Super Bowl yet. The decision to promote an internal coach also didn’t sit well with him. While Jerry Jones follows a philosophy of not paying much to the coaches, he never gives the rationale behind the decisions. Everyone was curious why he rejected reputed coaches like Ben Johnson without an interview. But the former receiver had another point.

He raised questions on the internal OC’s promotion and added, “You hire from within. How can you bring discipline to these guys when these guys say, dude, we put you in that seat.” This referred to claims that Dak Prescott was on good terms with OC. And he influenced Jerry Jones to hire him as the new head coach.

Overall, the new HC, son of legendary HC Marty Schottenheimer, grew up in a football atmosphere his entire life. But the task at the Cowboys is huge.

Jerry Jones reveals his stance on new HC hiring

It’s a risk that might pay dividends. Brian Schottenheimer has a 2-decade experience in the league as offensive coordinator of the NY Jets, Seahawks, and Jaguars. While Jones expressed belief in that, he also claimed they had taken a gigantic risk with the new HC and said, “If you don’t think I can’t operate out of my comfort zone, you’re so wrong. It’s unbelievable.

In saying so, Jerry Jones took a path he usually avoids. Explaining his decision! He revealed how they reached the decision to hire the new HC. Jones explained his conversations with the Schottenheimer at the scouting combine and Senior Bowl. He then revealed that Schottenheimer would point out all those things he disagreed with. This kind of impressed the owner.

However, he is right in his assessment. The risk is tremendous. But until we see how things will move on America’s team, everything else will be anticipation. He has seen enough changes in the league. And this might prove to be the game-changer.
