The Dallas Cowboys have made significant changes to the coaching staff for the coming season! With Brian Schottenheimer taking charge as head coach and play-caller after Mike McCarthy‘s departure, the team hopes for redemption this year. Moreover, Klayton Adams has taken charge as the offensive coordinator. While the other positions remain in flux, the TE room appears sorted, with Jake Ferguson playing a major role in the offense in his bounce-back year.
In a recent interview posted by Dallas Cowboys on YouTube titled, “Lunda Wells: Dominate the Line of Scrimmage | Dallas Cowboys 2025,” TE Coach Lunda Wells reflects on Fergusons’ comeback, but with a line of caution. While he had a breakout Pro Bowl season in 2024, he was prone to injury setbacks. Facing a knee injury in Week 1, followed by a concussion later in the season, it did not work out in his favor. With Dak Prescott also being away due to a torn hamstring, the offense struggled intensely as Ferguson had to play with backup QBs.
Now, in his bounce-back year, Wells’ primary expectation for Ferguson is streamlined. He needs to focus on durability and mental reset. Wells remarked, “We really got to do a nice job this offseason, building some real good calluses on your body so that it can really handle the way that he plays the game.”

He further continued his cautious word on injuries, “So that was a tough year for him. So the biggest thing is just getting back on the horse, taking care of your body, and putting your best foot forward this coming offseason to prepare you for the season.”
As HC Schottenheimer’s primary focus is on the offensive line, it is yet to be seen how Ferguson will adjust to it. Even though he is emerging from a challenging season, Schottenheimer and Adams see him as a dynamic weapon for the team.
Brian Schottenheimer has a big role for Jake Ferguson in 2025
Jake Ferguson took to the practice fields in Week 14 as he cleared the concussion protocol. In his absence, Luke Schoonmaker filled in his shoes. But now, fans are keenly expecting Fergusons’ healthy return for 2025. For him, balanced mental and physical health is necessary to offer a reliable red-zone target.

This season, Schottenheimer intends to establish a strong rushing attack, and Adams will factor in to support the same. Working on the offensive line, he will build the pass protection and the running game. Amidst this, Adams has made it clear that he does intend to overstep his role as he seeks to align with Schottenheimer’s vision. He remarked, “He’s going to call the plays, and I think it would be dumb on my part to try to force things on that call sheet that he doesn’t want to call.”
Schottenheimer believes strongly in Jake Ferguson’s capabilities, as he remarked, “Fergie really can help us big time, both run and pass,” in a CBS Sports article from Sept 2024. Ferguson can solidly contribute both as a receiver and a blocker. And, crucial to his run-focused scheme, Fergusons’ presence is necessary for Dak Prescott and the Cowboys to have a good 2025.
