Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is busy checking off boxes from the offseason to-do list. First, he looked to his left and then to his right for some help from his GM. Then he looked in the mirror, saw the badge of ‘General Manager’ pinned to his own chest, and remembered he was all alone in this quest. So he went on a solo mission to find the new HC for the team. Rather, he flirted with some established HCs before saving time (and money) by promoting a coach from within the team to the position.

So now, he has Brian Schottenheimer alongside him to build their dream squad together. Now, free agency has knocked on the team’s door. So, how is America’s Team planning to handle it? Well, Jerry Jones has always got a plan. It’s just that they stay secret until the last moment. And when they do emerge, the Cowboys fans are often left groaning.

So, what are Jones’ plans to deal with free agency this season? Enter Cowboys CEO (and Jerry’s son) Stephen Jones, who has the answer for you. Stephen and Brian recently had an ‘exclusive interview with The Dallas Morning News’, where they dropped some interesting tidbits about the team’s offseason plans. “We will be selectively strategic and aggressive,” shared Stephen with all the candor of a Pismo clam.

The team is already set to enter intorestructuring’ talks with QB Dak Prescott. The 31-year-old’s performance this season has been pretty average, and he has also struggled with injuries. Last season, the team signed him to a massive $240 million contract ($231 million guaranteed), which left them with little financial flexibility. But luckily, the league has increased the salary cap this year, potentially reaching between $277.5 million and $281.5 million. Thanks to that, the Cowboys will have a bit more breathing room. So, Stephen Jones’ comment about being ‘selectively strategic and aggressive‘ was made in this context.

Stephen also weighed in on their defensive star Osa Odighizuwa‘s contract situation. The team’s defensive tackle is set to hit free agency this year. We have had negotiations with Osa. I just think Osa is a really good football player. He’s an important piece.” But the player everybody is curious to know about is Micah Parsons.

Is Micah Parsons getting an extension from Jerry Jones?

That’s what the Cowboys Nation wants to know. Last season, QB Dak Prescott and WR CeeDee Lamb got contract extensions at the very last second before they reached free agency. The reason was simple: there is no better WR for Dallas than CeeDee. And who could have been their QB if not Prescott? This season, LB Micah Parsons would want the same treatment – an extension with the team before he hits free agency. Even if it’s with 0:02 left on the clock, as long as it’s a mega deal like Prescott’s.

Will Jerry Jones' secretive strategies finally pay off, or are Cowboys fans in for more disappointment?

But so far, Jerry Jones has been tight-lipped on the whole situation. The team doesn’t seem stupid enough to trade its—and possibly the league’s—best defensive star in his position, but you can never tell. And what if they get a trade offer in exchange for Parsons from some other team? Although Stephen did drop a statement, you cannot be sure how much can be made out of it. Hinting at possible negotiation talks, the team’s CEO said, “I don’t know the exact timing of that, so I don’t want to get out over my skis there. But he did mention that there will indeed be extension talks with Micah.

The LB could have held out if the team didn’t come up with anything before training camp kicked in, but Micah has no plans for that. There’s going to be rookies, there’s going to be free agents, guys that come here, you don’t know who’s going to be there, so there’s a chemistry part. People know what you can do, but they also have to see it from a leadership aspect. So I still gotta be there for that part,” he said.

So for now, that’s all there is about Micah Parsons’ contract extension. And, as for what Jerry Jones is thinking about the same, well, that’s quite a difficult task for anyone to figure out. We’ll leave you with the wildest rumor out there: Jones turns back time to his Herschel Walker playbook!
