It’s peak time for the Cowboys. Jerry Jones wants his team to win the Super Bowl after 3 decades. So, we expected changes from their end. And once the free agency opened on Monday, March 10, the America’s Team threw some surprises to their fanbase. It started with revamping their offensive line. That includes a massive exchange of talent.
According to Dallas Morning News writer David Moore, the Cowboys RB Rico Dowdle has decided to move out. It happened after the Cowboys owner and GM Jerry Jones signed Broncos RB Javonte Williams to a 1-year, $3 million deal with $500,000 in incentives. That’s almost a like-to-like exchange.

After ankle injuries marred the 2022 and 2023 seasons, where he played only 21 games (zero starters), Dowdle played 16 games (15 starters), recording 235 carries for 1,079 rushing yards and 2 TDs in the 2024 season. His receiving game was also good, with 39 receptions in 249 receiving yards and 3 touchdowns. Not only him, even the ex-Broncos player had his fair share of tough times.
In 2022, the ACL, LCL, and posterolateral corner injuries caused a knee tear. In 17 games (11 starters) in 2024, Williams had 139 rushes in 513 rushing yards and 4 touchdowns. Though he couldn’t score a receiving TD, the RB had 52 receptions for 346 receiving yards. So HC Brian Schottenheimer is happy with the update.
While the O-line got a major boost, the Cowboys also sorted out their cap space in the defensive line. It was a shocker for many fans as they didn’t think that even the veterans would end up getting traded. The free agency has hidden surprises.

Jerry Jones trades his cornerback
Another player is seeking out. CB Jourdan Lewis is on his way to the Jaguars for a 3-year $30 million contract, with $20 million guaranteed. That will make him the highest-paid cornerback in the league. The 3rd round pick (92nd overall) of the 2017 NFL Draft has played 8 seasons for the franchise.

The Aura Sports helped him renegotiate the deal. They also shared an IG post. But Jerry Jones’s player, now former, had signaled in early February that he wasn’t happy with the way things worked at the franchise. He shared a photo with the caption, “You can keep that getting old shit for the losers that won’t do what it takes.” That was the cue for the current move.
Amid this defensive drama, the owner is silently watching the other trades. He also has a deal to finalize with LB Micah Parsons. But fans argue that the price will keep on increasing if both parties don’t reach a good deal. The NFC East is becoming an interesting division.
