Just days after the Eagles snagged Cooper DeJean from the 2024 NFL Draft, their fans might get him to change his last name. While the 21-year-old’s surname rhymed with a word that was synonymous with trousers, natives of Philadelphia had nicknamed him with a special moniker from the Pennsylvanian city.

Shortly after joining the team, DeJean gave away his commitment to the fans in a Q&A with fellow Eagles draft Quinyon Mitchell.

The Philadelphia Eagles shared a clip of Cooper DeJean and Quinyon Mitchell answering questions that had been asked by fans. It might have started off slow for the 22-year-old. However, right off the bat, the cornerback was asked what he knew about the word “Jawn.” While that seemed to make him laugh, he stated, “I’ve seen all the Eagles fans putting this behind my last name. It’s kinda cool.”

For his second question, DeJean was asked when he would be changing his last name to “DeJawn.” That was when he joked and said, “Who knows? Maybe real soon.” Although a name change might be a lot to ask of the 21-year-old, it looks like he may already be walking into the team with a brand new nickname. After all, his fans have even taken to social media to give him a shout-out with the moniker.

While fans might be glad to have the star on their favorite team, they were not the only ones who were glad that the Eagles had bagged him. In fact, even the team’s owner, Jeffrey Lurie admitted that he was obsessed with getting DeJean to his team.

Although the cornerback had entered the Draft as a top pick, it was not the only sport that he had tried his hand at before making it into the NFL.

Cooper DeJean is a jack of all sports

For most athletes, one sport has always been their end-all. However, for Cooper DeJean, that was not the case. While his football journey has been amazing, the 21-year-old used to be a four-sport athlete back in high school. With him excelling at basketball, track, field play, and even baseball, he built quite an interest in every sport he decided to try. In an exclusive interview with EssentiallySports, the Eagles’ cornerback shared that his love for the games came from his grandfather.

DeJean continued that his granddad had been a “big baseball guy” and had helped him master the same. In fact, it was thanks to him that the 21-year-old wound up interested in football too. With his role model having been a former footballer, the cornerback’s love for the sport seemed rather justified.

Although DeJean made his way into the NFL after suffering a broken leg in Iowa, he claimed, “Baseball’s a tough sport to play.” He might have a point. However, his answer might change after the 21-year-old gets a taste of his first-ever Super Bowl season later this year.
