It seems the NHL has got its own Patrick Mahomes! Celebrated athlete Connor McDavid has yet again sent the sporting world into a frenzy. The Edmonton Oilers captain etched his name in the NHL history in the Stanley Cup Finals.
It is no surprise that the ice hockey star is looking to hoist his team’s flag in the Stanley Cup. Connor-led Edmonton Oilers registered a commanding 5-3 victory over Florida Panthers at Amerant Bank Arena on Tuesday, June 18. With this victory, the 27-year-old has scripted history. He now holds the record for being the first-ever player to consecutively score two four-point performances in the final games.
This makes him the maiden professional besides Oilers’ former, Wayne Gretzky, to attain such a terrific scorecard at any Cup Final. Owing to the captain’s elusive career record, it is speculated that Conner might enter the conversation for one of the best players ever produced by the sport alongside Gretzky, who is already considered the GOAT of the game.

While this triumph has certainly brought laurels to the star, this also enabled him to align his name with NFL icon and Kansas City Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes. McDavid is now being dubbed the closest NHL equivalent to Mahomes. As per Michelle Smallmon of ESPN, “Just like we talk about Patrick Mahomes and him being inevitable, and how you can never count him out – even if his receivers can’t catch a cold, even if he doesn’t look like he’s got it, even if he’s injured, we never count him out. That’s what we’re gonna talk about with Connor McDavid.”
It is worth noting that McDavid’s close friend and Chiefs QB have also clinched several laurels, which include leading his franchise to their maiden Super Bowl LIV appearance in 50 years during the 2019 season.
