When fans split and chose sides over who would be their quarterback next season, Russell Wilson or Justin Fields, expectations were big. But today the veteran is still stuck in limbo, whereas Fields moved on to the New York Jets on a two-year $40 million deal to replace Aaron Rodgers. But perhaps the decision by the 26-year-old came after a lot of deliberation. Think of it like this: Justin Fields gave a tremendous 4-2 start in the last season. Plus, the guy completed a career-best 65.8% of his passes for 1,106 yards, with five touchdowns. So why would the Steelers let go of him?

That’s where the major conflict arises. You see, according to a report from CBS NFL reporter Aditi Kinkhabwala, the Steelers were all in signing Fields as their QB1 but were beaten out by the Jets. In a tweet from last week, she wrote: Talked to multiple personnel execs who expressed zero surprise at #Jets giving Justin Fields two year-$40M deal. He’s smart, a hard worker and athletic enough to run. #Steelers coaches very tangibly improved his footwork and taught him how to see the field better. I’m told Steelers’ offer didn’t guarantee any money after first year.” I mean, considering the Steelers’ QB issues in the past few years, letting go of a young and athletic QB just for guaranteed income sounds a bit odd, isn’t it?

Enter ESPN’s Senior NFL insider, Jeremy Fowler, who discussed the Steelers’ QB situation. With Fields already out and the team unsure about Wilson, even Aaron Rodgers might be difficult to get, considering he is stuck in a situation with the Vikings. Does Pittsburgh have a Plan B? So talking about the whole situation on ‘The Dan Patrick Show’ on Monday, he stated:

“So, last week or a week and a half ago, they put together an offer for Justin Fields that I was told was very competitive with what the Jets offered him, which was two years 40 million with 30 million guaranteed,” he replied. Then why would Fields leave? Fowler opined, “Something went off where he chose the Jets, and he must have felt the love more from the Jets than he did with the Steelers, who essentially benched him last year for Russell Wilson.

And let’s be honest—that reason sounds pretty obvious. I mean, the team asked him to step up in place of Wilson—he did. The team asked him to give a thrilling start to the regular season—the guy literally nailed it. And just when Wilson returned, the Steelers benched him. So yeah, if Fields got a chance to play elsewhere, no wonder he was going to take the opportunity.

Fowler further said, “So he gets a fresh start. I do believe they were all in on Fields. I don’t know if they had Fields ahead of Rogers but they were willing to do Fields. Like both sides, at one point, were open to it. It didn’t work and so now, I just checked with the Steelers. They don’t have any updates. They’re waiting on the situation. They’re not bringing any other quarterbacks in for visits that I’m aware of. So they are not playing the Giants game. They’re waiting on Rodgers. They have Mason Rudolph as a backup. They signed him just sort of insurance last year…”

The Steelers may not have any updates so far, but it looks like Russell Wilson is not returning to Pittsburgh in 2025 unless they’ve no other options.

What’s your perspective on:

Did the Steelers fumble by letting Justin Fields slip away to the Jets for guaranteed money?

Have an interesting take?

Russell Wilson’s future is still up in the air!

Russell Wilson and Aaron Rodgers—the two biggest names in the NFL are still stuck in NFL limbo for 2025. But here’s where it gets wild—Wilson’s future might actually depend on Rodgers’ next move. Yes, the veteran is playing the ultimate game of QB dominoes, weighing offers from the Steelers, Vikings, and Giants. But where does he ultimately want to settle?

Reports suggest Rodgers wants to sign with the Vikings, who went 14-3 in 2024 before they fell to the Los Angeles Rams in their first-round playoff defeat. On the same note, the Vikings seem to be strongly considering him as a replacement for their 2024 starter Sam Darnol. Darnol signed a three-year, $100 million free-agent deal with the Seattle Seahawks.

While the 41-year-old veteran has his sight in the Vikings locker room, he is yet to get a green light from the head coach, Kevin O’Connell. On the other side, the Steelers and the Giants are waiting for an answer from Rodgers. Amidst all this chaos, Russell Wilson is probably waiting for his turn to get a deal done. The Vikings might not sign him. Plus, he visited New York last week but returned without a deal in his hand. That left him with the Steelers now—back to square one. The kicker?

Jeremy Fowler believes that the Steelers will sign Aaron Rodgers. “I still think he (Rodgers) will be you know, if I had to bet right now, it’s Pittsburgh Steelers,” he said on the Dan Patrick show. The reason? Well, O’Connell is known for choosing the best QBs for the team. Now that Sam Darnold is no longer in Minnesota, O’Connell needs to decide whether he wants to go ahead with J.J. McCarthy or Aaron Rodgers.

The odds and Fowler are favoring McCarthy to lead the Vikings in 2025. In that case, the team may not even get Rodgers on board. In that case, the Steelers would look to sign him up. However, there are some conflicting reports here as well. The Athletic’s Michael Silver, Dianna Russini, and Alec Lewis reported last week that Rodgers could consider retirement if the Vikings don’t sign him.

So yeah, there’s still a chance for Russell Wilson to play another season with the Steelers. But let’s not sugarcoat this. It’s going to happen only if the Pittsburgh team doesn’t have any other option.
