While we wait for Drake Maye to showcase his skills as the No. 3 NFL draft pick of the year, the Patriots‘ QB room underwent a seismic shift. Maye found his way into the team as Mac Jones was traded by the New England. Amidst the youth’s movement, Jacoby Brissett returned for his second stint with the Patriots. While preparing for a crucial role, Brissett shares his feelings on being the mentor of his competitor.
Earlier this year, Brissett took the responsibility of mentoring Drake. And on the Up & Adams show, he finally comes up with his thoughts on it. “I’m very confident in my skills and what I bring to the table as a player… it takes nothing away from me being a good person.“, answered Brissett when he was asked about how he played the dual role of playing and mentoring for the same position. With a record of 10,574 career passing yards, 216 being the highest in a single game, Brissett seems to have what it takes to be a QB1 mentor. But that’s not where the Patriots’ vet QB stopped.

Brissett confessed that it’s his teammates who will be the Patriots QB1 in his absence, “If something happens to me, I’m owing to the next person to come in“. This takes us back to the ‘Deflategate’ conspiracy which led to a straight 4 games suspension for Brady. It was the Patriots’ fight against the Houston Texans, when Brissett stepped up in the absence of Brady and took the Patriots to a 27-0 win. That’s what Brady’s mentorship meant for Jacoby. And that’s what Jacoby wishes to pass on to his mentee. Moreover, the Patriots’ vet QB1 was still not short of words in the Up & Adams show.
Owing to the fact that he learnt to balance between being a good teammate (a teammate in need is a teammate indeed) and competition, Jacoby revealed that he wants the whole Patriots team to play for 40 years. And if this needed him to be the guiding light of a rookie QB1, he’d happily take it, “If I can be a sprinkle in some ice, help him out, I think that’s a success.” But the run for the starting QB for the Patriots is still on.
Even though it’s still not clear who’s gonna be the QB1 of the Patriots this year, Jacoby Brissett is optimistic about his mentorship role. “He can make all the throws. He wants to learn football. He wants to get better,” said Brissett as the reason for him to be ‘excited’ about working with Drake. With the season knocking on the door, both the rookie and the veteran are grinding hard. Seems like Maye has a good mentor. So, is this a good opportunity for the rookie QB1 to shine brighter?

Drake Maye’s days at Jacoby Brissett’s home
The rookie QB was very excited after the end of his first training camp with the Patriots, “Yeah, it’s been awesome” said Mayo to the reporters. Moreover, Maye was having a good time learning from the veterans of his new home. “I, um, trying to learn as much as I can, and learn from the older guys, learn from Billy, learn from Jacoby” said the rookie QB1 with a big smile on his face after his first tiring training camp of the Patriots. Although Maye was optimistic about the training camp outcomes, Maye struggled a lot in his first 2 days of training. This is backed up by his slipping into an incompletion and struggles with accuracy on his first practice in pads. Moreover, in his first 11-on-11 period, Maye had three handoffs and a sack, which was not a standout performance on a training ground. But what did his mentor have to say about this?
As the Patriots started their training camp on Monday, vet QB Brissett seemed to like what he saw from his rookie signal-caller, “He’s just constantly trying to find ways to get better, making some nice throws out there and you’re seeing his progression come alive. Jacoby further said that Drake was handling ups and downs ‘like a professional‘, and he was sure of his success. In addition, Maye was becoming more and more comfortable with each passing day of training, “His comfort level grew with each practice, and he capped his spring with a TD pass to fellow rookie Ja’Lynn Polk“, said Mike Reiss of ESPN. Seems like Maye was fighting hard to neutralise the odds at his new home.
