There’s absolutely no doubt the Patriots found gold with their No.3 overall in Drake Maye. Like playing QB in a roster that has holes everywhere your eyes can reach is simply mind-blowing. However, Maye was actually the second rookie QB who was pushed into the role of a starter in Foxboro in the last 4 seasons. Before he showed flashes of brilliance, there was someone else who had already sold dreams to the Patriots Nation. But after his rookie year, those dreams never saw the daylight again. With that being said, it looks like that rookie, who is now a veteran in the league, seemingly outperformed Maye in a crucial stat.
You must have already guessed who we are talking about here. Mac Jones, the Patriots’ former No.15 overall pick lit up the Foxboro in his first year in the league. Jones had a rookie year he will never forget until he retires from the gridiron. Why? Since 2021, he has never managed to reach those heights. Jones started every game winning 10 of them while finishing runners-up for Offensive Rookie of the Year. And like Maye, he also earned a trip to the Pro Bowl as an alternate in 2022. See, you could say whatever Jones did in his first year. He did end up to be a bust. In just three seasons, his Patriots tenure was over and he was shipped off to Duval where he is now a backup to Trevor Lawrence.
However, there’s one thing he beat Maye to as a rookie in New England, which could be concerning to the Pats. Mac Jones apparently had a higher pass completion % 67.6 compared to Maye’s 66.6. Well, let me explain why this won’t be a problem. When Jones played as a rookie, his top 5 receivers were Kendrick Bourne, Jakobi Meyers, Hunter Henry, Nelson Agholor, and Brandon Bolden. And somewhat astonishingly, those names didn’t change much when Maye came around.

Drake Maye’s top 5 targets were: Henry, Demario Douglas, Kayshon Boutte, Austin Hooper and Kendrick Bourne. So, you could clearly see where the Patriots are stuck at. Since 2021, the Patriots haven’t drafted a single first-round receiver or TE to help their QB. Everyone else you see was either drafted in the second round or when it was time for the draft to wrap up. Ja’Lynn Polk was picked up in the second round. Douglas and Boutte in the sixth round. And none of them have lit up the gridiron with their explosive plays, which you naturally expect from a receiver.
So, how do you even expect that pass completion rate to go up when clearly the Patriots haven’t moved on from dead wood. Seriously, they need to sign loads of supporting cast to help Maye grow as a player. If they don’t, then brace yourself for Mac Jones 2.0. In the next three seasons, we will not be talking about the sky is the limit for Drake Maye. Instead, we could be debating what could have been with Drake Maye.
And while the Patriots try to bring Maye his offensive weapons. Looks like they are looking to move on from one of their veteran defensive tackle before next season.

Are the Patriots setting up Drake Maye for failure like they did with Mac Jones?
Have an interesting take?
Davon Godchaux will probably have to pack his bags soon
Davon Godchaux had been a loyal and consistent performer for the Patriots since 2021. For 4 straight seasons he has played all 17 games and has been an ever-present member of the Pats D-line. However, in the recent round of rumors swirling over Foxboro, the Patriots have apparently granted Godchaux permission to trade after signing an extension a year ago.
Like last offseason, Davon had just signed a two-year, $21M deal making a part of the Pats’ future. But the moment Mike Vrabel came through the door, Godchaux was on borrowed time. There’s a feeling the 30-year-old doesn’t fit into Vrabel’s defensive scheme of things. And they are looking to move him for a good value.

Expectation is that the Patriots will seek at least a fifth-round pick to trade away Godchaux. But there’s a belief he can bring only a sixth or 7th round pick at the very least. His age and bloated contract could make it difficult for the Patriots to get something out of him. So, let’s see what kind of future Godchaux has in the NFL. Whatever it could be, come 2025, he will surely have a new home, considering the Pats manage to draft a defensive tackle of their own. More than $125M in cap space and a No.4 overall pick only paints a bleak picture in Godchaux’s future in New England.
