The Giants have their hands full! A poor record, resulting in almost a lost season, chalking off Daniel Jones from the QB1 spot, and now getting critiqued for promoting Tommy DeVito ahead of Drew Lock was the last thing they wanted. But they’ve been forced to play that game. And this Commanders legend did not hold back his views on this move.
Responding to an X post claiming DeVito knows the offense better than Lock, Mark Schlereth didn’t mince words: “He knows the sh-t offense better than Lock? Stop it! If that’s true, why wasn’t he the #2 QB all season? So the @Giants just realized he knows the offense better in Week 12? REALLY?” Ouch, this one has to be stinging the worst, especially coming from a 3x SB winner and a rival legend. But let’s break this down.

DeVito was an undrafted rookie signed by the Big Blue in 2023, hoping he could bring the surprise element. And to be fair to him, he did it… Showing flashes of promise. But that’s it—stats don’t lie. A 64% completion rate and just 1,101 passing yards are not pro-level at all. Add in 8 touchdowns to 3 interceptions, and you’ve got a QB who’s still figuring things out. Add this signal-caller in a clueless O-line. That’s screaming trouble. Hey, there’s more… Those 8 sacks? That pocket presence needs work.
Guess this is why Schlereth thinks this move isn’t about football at all. He called it out, saying, “You decide to go with the sideshow, Tommy Cutlets. Because why? Because your fan base will be excited?” It’s harsh but not without merit. And what about Drew Lock? Schlereth’s frustration echoes a sentiment shared by many: Lock signed with the Giants expecting to be the next man up if Jones went down. Instead, he’s been leapfrogged at the last minute. That kind of move, Schlereth warns, could scare off free agents. “You’re a bad franchise. You need to attract free agents… If I’m a free agent and I look at this clown show, I’m not going to the Giants,” he said.
Schlereth’s circus music mockery may have been over-the-top, but it drives home a harsh reality: the Giants are teetering on the edge of irrelevance. So, is DeVito really the answer? Here’s the rub: DeVito might be exciting for fans. However, he’s far from the solution. The Giants’ offense has been stuck in neutral, ranking last in scoring during a brutal five-game losing streak. Sure, it’s a system-wide issue. But going from Daniel Jones to a rusty DeVito is not exactly going to help.
The Giants dodged Daniel Jones’ contract, but are they really in the clear?

Are the Giants making a mistake by choosing DeVito over Lock, or is it a smart gamble?

The writing was on the wall for Daniel Jones, but that doesn’t mean the fallout has been easy to digest. Even Dexter Lawrence, the Giants’ defensive star, wasn’t shy about voicing his feelings. At a charity event, he said, “That’s my best friend. It’s tough for that to happen… As a human and as a brother, I feel for him.” Tough love from the front office, right? But benching Jones wasn’t just about his performance; it was a calculated move to avoid a financial bind.

You see, Jones signed a four-year, $160 million deal in 2023. But only half of that was guaranteed. The Giants safeguarded themselves with a key escape clause: if Jones sustained a long-term injury, $23 million of his 2025 salary would be guaranteed. By sidelining him now, they avoid that potential dead cap nightmare. It’s cold, but hey, this is football. Sometimes you punt on fourth down.
Now, the baton passes to Tommy DeVito. Leapfrogging Drew Lock, from QB3 to QB1, who’s spent the season as the backup. This all seems chaotic, doesn’t it? I mean, we are not alone as even Lawrence—being on the roster—doesn’t seem sold, saying, “To me, (Jones is) the best quarterback on the team. But they see things differently.” Huh… Not quite the best but the thing is it was just too sudden for anyone’s liking. And not to be the devil’s advocate here, but this shuffle is not about improving a 2-8 record. It feels more like rearranging deck chairs on a sinking ship.

And while Lawrence hates it too for his ‘Best Friend’, he is optimistic about DeVito’s confidence, noting, “He has probably the most charisma and confidence I’ve ever seen in a third-string quarterback.”
Um, not much from the fans on this, and it’s probably because you guys have given up on the season. But there’s a lot that the Giants need to do to build on a good roster. And it’s from the upcoming Bucs game. For starters, to avoid it, they could have been better off with some good handling of the Daniel Jones situation. But what-ifs are never good. So, it’s Tommy DeVito to play the magician. Do you think he can do it?
