Should the Washington Commanders bring back the 'Redskins' name to honor their rich history?

Remember the 1990s era of the Washington Redskins? That team was arguably considered as one of the best in NFL history. Why? Well, they reached the playoffs a couple of times, and even won a Super Bowl in 1991. Not only that! The team also dominated both offense (scoring “485 total points during the regular season and only allowing nine sacks”) and defense (“giving up 224 total points”).

However, this was the same era when they saw the downfall after a couple of retirements at the coaching positions. But later on in 2022, the Redskins changed their name to Washington Commanders. And now, a request to change the name and go back to the original has created chaos on social media.

Will the Commanders revisit their name Redskins again?

According to MLFootball on X, “Former #Colts head coach Chuck Pagano says the Washington Commanders should CHANGE THEIR NAME BACK TO THE REDSKINS. ‘They should go back…’.” So, is that possible? Well, no! As per the X account, Pagano was told “that’s not allowed by the league,” to which, the former HC expressed, “That’s why I said it.” Because, “the push continues from all over.”

This statement from Chuck Pagano came after the Commanders won two consecutive games in three matchups in this season. In addition to that, many fans speculate that as Pagano’s older brother, John Pagano, is the defensive assistant for the Commanders currently, this might have prompted Chuck to express his thoughts for Commanders. And guess what? Many fans rallied behind him, saying that Redskins suit better than the Commanders for the Washington Football team.

Nevertheless, it is impossible for now to change their name back to Redskins due to the owner’s previous comments about “obvious reasons” – racial injustice.

It became a league-wide movement and so the decision was made. Actually, what happened was, “Redskins” is considered a racially charged word. And so, due to “sponsor pressure and national protests against racial injustice for years,” Washington underwent a significant rebranding in 2022. They changed their name to Commanders from Redskins. But the interesting factor is that it wasn’t the first time they changed their name. Earlier Commanders were founded in 1932 as the “Boston Braves.” Then in 1993, the team decided to call themselves the Washington Redskins.

Although the owner justified this name by saying that the term Redskins is kept to honor the native American tribes, it didn’t sit well with many. And hence, in July 2020, the team first opted to go with the Washington Football Team on a temporary basis. Then again, in January 2022, the team announced that they had many options in mind, such as: Armada, Brigade, Red Hogs, Presidents, Commanders, RedWolves, and Defenders. However, a month later, they finally announced that the team is going with the Commanders as their final name.
