Do Steelers players really think Justin Fields is better than Russell Wilson? What's your take on this?

Camp has started and we’re headed to the Steel City to see what is up with Russell Wilson and his squad. The Super Bowl-winning QB went there on the friendliest of the team-friendly deals. However, there are rumors that he’s been having trouble finding new friends. Well, it shouldn’t be because people in the past have attested to his character.

Well, it was Colin Cowherd who got the pigeon carrying a small letter. In that letter, he found out that Russell Wilson is slowly developing a repertoire with Mike Tomlin. Well, he has to because Tomlin is the head coach. But is there any other ulterior motive behind Russell extending his hand? Maybe it’s a young Justin Fields, who’s already stealing the hearts of the squad black and yellows.

“It’s like [he’s] good-looking, rich guy, beautiful wife. Just the way the world works, you’d be kind of popular. He’s not really. We’ve seen players in Denver, we’ve seen players in Seattle, coaches take shot at Russell. I like him, but he comes off to a lot of people as inauthentic and I don’t think he’s changed. In fact, he’s befriended I’ve been told Mike Tomlin more than any teammate.” said Cowherd on The Colin Cowherd Podcast.

The way Cowherd described the situation it sounded like Russ is a kindergarten kid looking for new friends in the playground. All that talk about Russell Wilson being in the “pole position” might have come out of Wilson being chummy with Tomlin in the first place. Or maybe not. Talking about Wilson’s peers taking shots at him, well, it’s just not limited to his peers. “Steel City, let’s weld,” is the running joke about the Super Bowl winner these days.

A couple of months ago, Russ got a bit emotional about getting a chance to play with Mike Tomlin and his Steelers. “To play 13 years in the NFL has been a dream come true,” Wilson said, adding “to be able to play for Mike Tomlin; to stand side by side with him and try to accomplish all the goals that I want to accomplish with the Steelers organization, and what that represents for the NFL, is one of the greatest gifts in the world.”

Some might think of these emotions as Russ trying to pander to Mike Tomlin. But as far as we know, Wilson is a genuine dude. People might find him corny at times, but he’s genuine. But banter aside, Russ recently suffered a calf injury when he was pushing the sled. He was a limited participant in Saturday’s practice, did a bit more on Sunday, and was finally sidelined with a calf issue. But it’s nothing major. The HC-QB1 duo are on the same page.

Russ admitted to The Athletic, “I feel good. It’s nothing to panic about or get too worried about.” Tomlin thinks that same and wants “to keep a minor thing from becoming major.” But despite of their relationship and Tomlin’s trust in the QB1, Colin Cowherd thinks that Justin Fields is the locker room celebrity.

Despite a major faltering Justin Fields had during his Chicago Bears tenure, he never had a dearth of teammates backing him up. Yes, he’s shaky at times and had a 2,562 yard season with 16 touchdowns, but the players in the locker room loved him. In fact, they defended him from the constant questions thrown in his way like a penalty flag.

Eddie Jackson thought Fields was a “magician,” Montez Sweat thought the QB to be “very dynamic” with Lamar Jackson-esque qualities. DJ Moore thought that “He is him… I want him to be the quarterback.” Fields took over the Pittsburgh Steelers locker room with the same aura and per Cowherd, the locker room loves the young QB.

“Here comes Justin Fields, who to the last day in Chicago, despite being the worst fourth-quarter quarterback in like a decade, players LOVED him. He’s young, he’s a nice guy, he’s supporting, he’s securing himself,” said Cowherd and went on to compare him against Zach Wilson and criticized his bad play reading abilities. However, the most astounding thing about Justin Fields was his 2022 season, where he rushed for 1,143 yards and 8 rushing tuddys! Those are running back numbers.

Now that Wilson is hurt, though a “minor” deal, Justin Fields might be the practicing QB and who knows, Steel City stars might like him even more.
