After playing with the Dallas Cowboys for over a decade, offensive tackle Tyron Smith has joined the New York Jets. With the Jets looking to build a contender team for the upcoming season, this addition could go a long way. And NFL media personality Colin Cowherd is heralding this signing as smart.

Smith was drafted by the Cowboys in the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft. After the end of the last season, both parties could not agree to a new deal. Smith explored free agency, eventually signing with the Jets for 1-year deal worth up to $20 million. So why is this signing of an OT for merely a year considered smart by Cowherd?

“Tyron Smith gives you about 14 games a year now. 13-14 games and that’s about it”, said Cowherd on his podcast. Cowherd suggests that playing the entire regular season of 17 games might be too much for the 33-year-old OT. However, Cowherd “really liked” one aspect of Smith last season!

“He certainly got a year left in the tank”, said the 60-year-old Cowherd, as he suggested that Smith can perform a top job for at least a year, before deteriorating. “I watched a couple cowboy games last year, he gets his hands on you, it’s still over”, said Cowherd about Smith’s defensive capabilities.

“I thought it was really smart with the Jets”, said Cowherd on the Jets’ decision to sign the 8X Pro Bowler for only 1 year. And the Jets look to be going all in for the upcoming 2024-25 season. What could be the reason behind this shift in gear?

Aaron Rodgers is the fulcrum of the Jets

Earlier this month the Jets GM Joe Douglas said, “Protection for Rodgers is paramount” to the media. After the blockbuster move to the Jets, QB Aaron Rodgers got injured in the opening game of the season and had to sit out the entire year. Now the Jets are bolstering the team around the 40-year-old to push for success.

The Jets have failed to qualify for the playoffs in the last 13 years! And bringing Rodgers to New Jersey from the Green Bay Packers is their best bet to end the streak. However, the Jets management is acutely aware of A-Rod’s age and knows this season is their best hope!
