Super Bowl LIX is just three days away: Chiefs against Eagles—it’s going to be amazing! Will Mahomes and his crew complete their three-peat? Or will the Eagles’ defense claim victory? The questions are endless, and the excitement is simply overwhelming. Given the Super Bowl’s status as a major global sporting event, the excitement is understandable; however, are you familiar with its beginnings?
Well, the Chief’s first lady shared some interesting trivia on Instagram. Tavia Hunt shared a story revealing how the Chiefs’ first owner, Lamar Hunt, created the term Super Bowl. Hunt shared a clip that said, “Did you know the term Super Bowl was created by the very first owner of the Kansas City Chiefs? That’s right, meet Lamar Hunt, a visionary who shaped football for 47 years, starting with the American Football League in 1959.”
Lamar Hunt was a pioneer when it came to football. The founder of the AFL and MLS, he’s one of just three to receive the National Soccer Hall of Fame’s medal of honor. In 1966, when the AFL and NFL finally merged, and it was decided they would have a championship game after the season, Hunt wrote to the NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle and said, “I have kiddingly called it the ‘Super Bowl,’ which obviously can be improved upon.”

But why “Super Bowl” and not anything else? Well, that is because Lamar Hunt got the idea for the name after he saw his children playing with a “Super Ball” toy. Yes, the name of one of the biggest sporting events of the year was inspired by a toy ball. For the first 2 seasons, though, the game was simply called the “AFL-NFL Championship Game”. However, as the media and fans loved the term Super Bowl, it became official in 1969. Quite interesting, isn’t it?
It’s not just Lamar Hunt who loved football; his sons continued his legacy, and now his granddaughter is also involved with the Chiefs team.

Hunt also talked about how the media sometimes downplays the Chiefs’ recent achievements. The team has won two back-to-back Super Bowls and is on the verge of creating history. She talked about how people don’t talk about their ‘hard work‘ but rather sell the ‘lucky‘ narrative far too often. Well, it’s no small achievement to reach 3 Super Bowls and who knows, the Chiefs might just achieve the unthinkable and achieve that coveted three-peat.
Whether it was Lamar Hunt founding the team back in 1960 or Gracie Hunt supporting them in 2025, the Hunt family is the backbone of the Chiefs. They have played an incredible role in Super Bowl history, as the term ‘Super Bowl’ itself originated from them, making it seem like destiny that the team owned by the same family achieves the first 3-peat. Well, who knows? We will just have to wait and find out.
