Harrison Butker and his commencement speech divided the NFL world. The professional expressed, “One of the most important roles for a woman is being a homemaker” at Benedictine College, among other controversial statements. His strong controversial opinions even led the tennis star Serena Williams to take a jab at him at her ESPYS hosting ceremony.
Just like the tennis superstar, many shared their point of view regarding the matter. But, there was a shush from the Chiefs‘ kicker. Now, with a new deal worth $25.6 million for 4 years has once again given Butker the podium to clarify what was said one humid summer. On Wednesday, August 7, 2024, Harrison Butker did not shy away from admitting that his comments about women were “very intentional.”
However, he didn’t intend to hurt anyone’s feelings, as his statements never meant to put women down. Clarifying his point, Butker mentioned, “My whole career, I’ve talked about how I’m a husband and I’m a father before it comes to me as a kicker, something I’ve always preached.”

He continued, “But then when I use that to talk about women, I say that they should embrace and love being wives and being mothers over their career, I think then it gets construed that I’m trying to put women down, which I’m not at all.” Butker even addressed his remarks by saying, “I was very intentional with what I said, and I stand behind what I said.”
In May, the kicker told the graduating class that “probably the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world” than receiving degrees. This remark soon ignited criticism for him, with many graduates even saying that his remarks were “uncomfortable” and were not said at the correct place and time.

Even Serena Williams and her co-hosts at the ESPYS took a jab at the player. That moment happened on Thursday night on July 11, when the Williams sisters (Serena & Venus) and comedian Quinta Brunson discussed women’s sports. In the event, Venus said, “So, go ahead and enjoy women’s sports like you would any other sports, because they are sports.” However, her statement was followed by Serena’s remarks on Butker when she said, “Except you, Harrison Butker. We don’t need you.” “At all. Like, ever” was added by the comedian. Although the room had a good laugh on this, the Chiefs kicker might have felt the jibe.
In addition to these growing criticisms, the NFL also pulled their hands from it, saying that what Butker said was his views, and not of the organization. However, now that the 29-year-old tried to clarify his misinterpreted comments on women, he stood by what he said. Despite the backlash, the Chiefs’ player has clarified that he still stands firm with his opinion, without any intention of harming anyone’s feelings. So now, it remains to be seen how the world will react to his recent clarification.
Meanwhile, till then, the three-time Super Bowl winner has received the fruit of what he did last season.
Harrison Butker kicked off to enter the $25M door!
Despite his off-field controversy, Harrison Butker is happy after signing a new big deal. The Chiefs locked in their superstar kicker about two days ago, with a four-year extension that makes him the highest-paid kicker in NFL history, leaving Justin Tucker of the Baltimore Ravens behind. But the interesting part of this contract is that he himself reportedly negotiated the deal with the team. A feat less seen in the league!

As per Butker’s previous contract, the professional athlete still had one year left in his deal. This means Butker is now locked for five years with the Chiefs in total. This new deal, worth $25.6 million, comes with $17.8 million guaranteed money. Thus, he will now make $6.4 million per year. Therefore, sharing his excitement with his X followers, Butker said, “There’s no place I’d rather be than with the Chiefs, excited to finalize a 4-year extension. To the Heights!”
