NFL coaching careers? Yeah, they’re never straight lines. Some moments shape everything, while others just kick things into high gear. For Chuck Pagano, a simple conversation last week led him back to the NFL. The former Indianapolis Colts head coach is returning to the Baltimore Ravens, and for Pagano, it feels like fate. But this isn’t just about a comeback—it’s a full-circle moment, one rooted in the bond with John Harbaugh that changed it all.
Pagano didn’t mince words when discussing how his career took off in Baltimore. “When I went to Baltimore in ’08 with him his first year… the success that we had, you know, as a DB coach and then a defensive coordinator in my final season… it changed the whole trajectory of my career,” he said on The Pat McAfee Show. Back in 2011, after a heartbreaking loss in the AFC Championship Game. Pagano’s career took a sudden turn—he was offered the head coaching job for the Indianapolis Colts. “I mean, it changed everything,” he reflected. The years he spent in Baltimore under Harbaugh’s leadership gave him the foundation he needed, proving that coaching under the right mentor can shape an entire legacy.
“I’ve always stayed in touch with John Harbaugh and we’ve always been very close..
We talked a lot of ball yesterday and the job offer really came out of nowhere..
I’m very grateful for the opportunity and Baltimore is a special place” ~ @ChuckPaganoNFL #PMSLive https://t.co/oIcuzxLxjP pic.twitter.com/dHyM4jneDo

Pagano has never been shy about his admiration for Harbaugh and the Ravens organization. When discussing his decision to return, he pointed to Baltimore’s consistency. “It always comes down to people, right, Pat?” he emphasized. “Steve Bisciotti, Ozzie [Newsome], Eric DeCosta, John Harbaugh, the staff… everybody in that building, I know all those people. Not much has changed.” For a coach looking for the perfect situation, familiarity is invaluable. The relationships he built during his first tenure made it easier to say yes this time around.
Fittingly, the opportunity came when Pagano wasn’t even looking for himself. He revealed that he had originally reached out to Harbaugh on behalf of another coach seeking a job. “I texted him last week and I was texting for a friend,” Pagano said. “So I reached out, text John, said, ‘Hey, I’ve got a name for you, potential spot on your defensive staff.‘” But the conversation quickly shifted. Harbaugh, knowing Pagano’s passion for the game, asked him point-blank: “You good? You itching a little bit?” That simple question rekindled a fire that had never truly gone out, setting off a chain of events that led to his Ravens hiring.
The legacy still grows…

Pagano admitted that coaching never really left his mind, even after stepping away in 2020. “Probably the day I retired,” he laughed when McAfee asked when he started considering a return. “I’ve always thought about it, Pat… it just had to be the perfect situation.” That ‘perfect situation‘ came in the form of a role that didn’t demand the high-stakes pressure of a head coaching or coordinator gig. Instead, it offered him the chance to do what he loves—coach defensive backs—while working in an organization he holds in the highest regard.
Beyond the relationships, the Ravens’ on-field potential played a huge role in his decision. “They built up a phenomenal roster as we know, right?” Pagano noted. “We’ve been watching them. They are a wagon from top to bottom.” With a team that just finished the 2024 regular season at 12-5 and boasts stars on both sides of the pigskin, the chance to contribute to a legitimate contender was too good to pass up.
The timing of Chuck Pagano’s return is poetic. The Ravens have been a defensive powerhouse for years, and under Harbaugh, they’ve maintained that reputation. Pagano will now join a staff led by defensive coordinator Zach Orr, working alongside familiar faces to keep Baltimore’s defense among the league’s elite. “Just an opportunity in this role to go help John and this organization… the role is perfect,” he said. It’s a different kind of challenge from being a head coach, but one that fits where he is now in his career.

In a way, Pagano’s journey has come full circle. He started as a defensive backs coach in Baltimore, helped lead the team to an AFC Championship appearance, and then got his big break in Indianapolis. Now, after years away, he’s back—still grateful for the moment that changed everything. “I owe that organization a ton,” he admitted. And as he steps back into the Ravens’ facility, one thing is clear: Chuck Pagano isn’t just coming back to coach—he’s returning home.
