The Kansas City Chiefs are on a roll as we speak! Despite a staggering 15-2 record that solidified their place among the bigwigs, it’s expected that Andy Reid wouldn’t rest easy. Especially after an unfulfilled three-peat dream, isn’t that a concept too far-fetched? Well, yes. The front office has been working overtime planning a meticulous comeback reminiscent of Reid’s post Super Bowl LIX loss reaction: “You learn from it as a coach, you learn from it as a player, and you move on.” However, today we’re here to talk about one particular addition that’s got 49ers players Christian McCaffrey and Kyle Juszczyk in heartbreak, and nostalgia.

On March 10, reports stated that the Chiefs had signed former San Francisco 49ers running back Elijah Mitchell on a one-year, $3.5 million deal as the second 49ers player to join Reid. Notably, the 26-year-old has been with the 49ers since they drafted him 194th overall in 2021 out of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. As a rookie, Elijah Mitchell was a beast, racking up 963 yards and five touchdowns on 207 carries. However, a downward spiral hit soon…

The player was put on injury reserve in September 2022, after suffering a sprained MCL in Week 1. Another sprained MCL in Week 12 rendered him out yet again. Mitchell ultimately finished the season with 45 carries for 279 yards and two touchdowns. In 2023, he was, unfortunately, somewhat of a hit-or-miss in the lineup, managing 281 yards and two touchdowns on 75 carries. But, now with a change of scenery, can Mitchell find his form back? Well, we can certainly hope so. But a happy start also means a sad end. And looks like Mitchell’s former teammates McCaffrey and Juszczyk are especially feeling the heat…

On March 11, Mitchell shared his elation on Instagram, “A longtime dream came true here and I will forever be grateful to the entire 49er’s organization. It’s been real but there’s so much left to accomplish. Thank you again Niner nation🙏🏽”. Shortly after, McCaffrey shared the post on his IG Story, and wrote, “My Dog,” complete with a saluting face emoji. Juszczyk, on the other hand, commented on the post, expressing his admiration for his ex-teammate.

“You know you’re my brother for life and I’m so proud of you… but a pat and go pic?? You done made too many big plays for this! Love you man!” the heartfelt comment read. But now that the young running back has made his place in his dream team, there’s a more important question to ask: How is he going to fit in?

Well, Mahomes’ team has several key free agents on both sides of the ball. They need to determine which players can contribute next season and who to bring in for improvement. The Chiefs have some gaps to fill. They must start with the offensive line, which was a major issue last season. If they don’t fix it, they’ll likely see the same results. That’s where Mitchell comes in. He’s been a solid running back for the 49ers and has stepped up as a starter whenever needed. But wh͏at does th͏is mean for the͏ other r͏unnin͏g b͏acks and the Chiefs next s͏easo͏n? “͏The͏ Chiefs have a back with experience to thr͏ow͏ i͏nto ͏the͏ playing m͏ix along with I͏siah ͏Pac͏heco. T͏he tea͏m’s other two ͏main bac͏ks fr͏o͏m last͏ s͏eas͏on,͏ Kareem Hunt and ͏Samaj͏e P͏erine, are potential unre͏stricted free ͏ag͏ents,” sa͏i͏d E͏SPN Chiefs re͏porter ͏Ad͏am Teic͏her.

The Athletic‘s Nate Taylor, on the other hand, opined, “Mitchell could be a quality change-of-pace back for the Chiefs to complement starter Isiah Pacheco, who will also look to return to form after further recovering from the broken fibula in his right leg that he suffered early last season. Mitchell has nice speed and good hands, so his natural fit might be as a third-down back.”

Having said that, just when you thought the 49ers were done shaking things up, they take on an $86 million burden with two player cuts— what’s their game plan?

To ease the financial blow, they designated Hargrave and Collins as post-June 1 cuts, pushing some costs to 2026. Hargrave was let go just two years into his four-year, $81 million deal following a tough injury in 2024. He quickly signed a two-year, $30 million deal with the Minnesota Vikings, which includes $19 million guaranteed, according to his agent.

Collins, who joined from Houston last offseason, recorded five sacks but struggled with run defense during his tenure in San Francisco. He also secured a two-year, $20 million deal with Cleveland, with $13 million fully guaranteed, as reported by his agent.

Earlier this week, the Niners also cut defensive end Leonard Floyd and fullback Kyle Juszczyk, signaling some serious changes. Several key players made moves in free agency on Monday: Dre Greenlaw and Talanoa Hufanga are heading to Denver, Charvarius Ward is off to Indianapolis, Jaylon Moore and Elijah Mitchell are joining Kansas City, and Joshua Dobbs is making his way to New England.

These deals have been͏ confirm͏e͏d by sources who wish to rema͏in anonymous. It appears Aaron Banks has a ͏deal lined up͏ with Gre͏e͏n Bay.
