Is Mike McCarthy's time with the Cowboys running out? Can he prove Russo wrong?

The Dallas Cowboys have had a rocky start to the season, with inconsistent performances leaving head coach Mike McCarthy on shaky ground. He made it to the playoffs in three of his four seasons. But this time, McCarthy is facing rising pressure to maintain the hype of America’s team. A brilliant away thrashing of the Cleveland Browns in Week 1 convinced everyone that this may be the year for the Cowboys. Those hopes didn’t last long, as they lost back-to-back games against the Saints and the Ravens. Naturally, with the team failing to record wins on the field, there are talks of changes. The buck usually stops with the head coach, and we have a few contenders. None bigger than Bill Belichick.

Senior analyst Chris Russo made it clear that Belichick coaching the Cowboys is unlikely despite McCarthy’s position becoming more precarious. The discussion came in a recent episode of the Gojo and Golic podcast. “Jerry Jones doesn’t like to bring in big-name coaches,” Russo pointed out, referencing Jones’ history of sticking with coaches for long periods, like Jason Garrett and Wade Phillips.

While Belichick is often mentioned, Russo doubts Jones will make a bold move, even with McCarthy on thin ice. Adding to more context, the Mad Dog suggested that Jones’ patience is key, adding, “Jerry doesn’t fire coaches midseason, and McCarthy’s playoff record, though not great, keeps him afloat for now.”

As for other teams, the Jacksonville Jaguars, Chicago Bears, and even the Cincinnati Bengals have been mentioned as possible destinations for Belichick. The Jaguars, struggling this season, offer an intriguing option with their young quarterback, Trevor Lawrence. The Bears, with a potentially generational talent in Caleb Williams, might also tempt Belichick.

“You know, the McCarthy thing is they have a bad year. Jerry cannot bring him back with a bad year. Now does he bring in Belichick?,” added the analyst, emphasising on Jerry Jones might stay with McCarthy. In the meantime, McCarthy’s job is still at risk, especially if the Cowboys don’t improve. Is Belichick better than McCarthy? One might wonder, but to be honest, both are best in their own ways. It is all time, and that is the main test at the moment for the latter.
