Travis Kelce or Gronk—who's the real GOAT tight end in the NFL?

Travis Kelce knows how to ball and roll! “The best tight end in the National Football League.” Kansas City Chiefs’ official Instagram posted this when the tight end received ninth rank in the NFL Top 100 players list this year. For many, arguably, Kelce is the best TE currently. However, for his retired NFL athlete brother, Jason Kelce, Rob Gronkowski takes the spot!

In a new episode of the Green Light with Chris Long podcast which was released on August 9, 2024, the hosts, Long and Beau Allen, were joined by Jason and former Eagles TE Brent Celek. Having a tight end in the show, Long perfectly utilized the opportunity to ask him who the tight ends he likes to watch. Answering his question, Celek said pointing towards Jason, “His brother, I mean greatest tight end of all time. I think he’s solidified himself.

However, Jason intervened and namedGronk.” Then, Long too, chimed in saying, “I’m a Gronk guy. But I also think it’s like 1A 1B, they are almost two different players.” However, Jason Kelce further intervened to comment, “I think, listen, Gronk was a fantastic player.” To which the former Eagles tight end admitted, “I think Gronk was a better blocker, your brother could be.

On this statement, when Long asked Jason what Travis would think about this, the former Birds’ center acknowledged that the Chiefs tight end would probably agree that Gronk is a better blocker than him. However, Jason was quick to defend his brother, saying, “I think Trav, I think if he was in a system that required him to do it (the block) he could have done that stuff. Well, I think he would be conditioning his body differently… like he has it in him to be a good block. He’s a route runner.

Praising him further, Long pointed out that Travis has an incredible ability to find open space on the field, especially when working with Patrick Mahomes. Even Jason agreed to that, adding that Travis was just as effective with Alex Smith as his quarterback. He emphasized that Travis is an instinctual and free-flowing player, and it’s remarkable how he and Mahomes are often on the same wavelength.

This kind of natural chemistry makes it extremely difficult for defenses to prepare against them because their play can adapt to any situation, making it unpredictable and hard to counter. However, this is not the first time the 36-year-old has extended support to his brother. The older Kelce brother recently admitted that he supported Travis even when he played with the Eagles.

Adding a surprising element to it, Jason highlighted how people only started noticing their bond when they faced off in the Super Bowl on February 12, 2023, making history as the first brothers to play against each other in the big game. The Eagles’ star mentioned that he found it amusing that for most of his career, no one cared that he supported the Chiefs and wore their gear. But after their Super Bowl clash, suddenly everyone was paying attention.

So when February 12, 2023 came, Travis described that experience as “wild and kind of surreal.” He said, “I feel like I’ve been getting asked this question for my entire career. ‘What would you feel if you played your brother in the Super Bowl?’ The entire time I’ve been like, ‘That’s been the goal.’ Now that it’s actually happening, it’s kind of sick. Now someone’s gotta send their brother home.
