There’s a moment every great athlete eventually faces—that split second when they realize the clock is ticking on their career. Some go out on top, basking in the glow of their final championship. Others fade quietly, their best days behind them. And then there’s Travis Kelce, who doesn’t seem quite ready to make that call just yet. For years, Kelce has played the game with a mix of dominance and joy, making the impossible look effortless. But after 12 seasons, four Super Bowl appearances (a fifth upcoming), and countless records, whispers of retirement have followed him all season. Is this the last ride? Would a win on Sunday be the perfect way to walk away?
Turns out, sports reporter and writer Ian Rapoport’s latest report might have some answers to these questions. According to Rapoport, “From what I am told, Travis Kelce is undecided about whether or not he wants to play during the 2025 season. He has said he believes he has a lot of good football left. He has said he envisions himself playing for the Kansas City Chiefs. But he has not been definitive.” The 45-year-old discussed Kelce’s potential retirement during Saturday night’s episode of The Insiders.
#Chiefs star TE Travis Kelce has said he’s got a lot of good football left. Yet whether he plays in 2025 is very much up in the air.
Sources say Kelce is undecided about his future, and Sunday’s result could affect it. My story: https://t.co/GcxaqikEHbhttps://t.co/GcxaqikEHb

Rapoport also believes that Travis’s decision could very much depend on how the Super Bowl turns out for the Chiefs. The Chiefs’ TE was asked about his future during the opening night of the Super Bowl in New Orleans. “Hopefully still playing football. I love doing this. I love coming to work every day,” said Kelce. But then, the very next minute, he added, “We’ll see what happens. I know I’ve been setting myself up for other opportunities in my life. That’s always been the goal, knowing that football only lasts for so long.“
The Chiefs’ TE also opened up about what fuels him to keep playing.

When you’re playing with a team like the Chiefs, it’s obvious you’d never want to walk away. The same goes for Travis Kelce, who’s been getting bombarded with retirement questions lately. But with the Chiefs building a dynasty right before his eyes, the TE isn’t ready to hang up his cleats just yet. Kelce wants to be part of this team that’s making history. And who can blame him?
The Chiefs’ star TE shut down any retirement talk during the prime-time Super Bowl media event. Making it clear that he’s coming back for at least one more season. No matter how Sunday’s game against the Eagles plays out. “I’ve got a full heart of football left in me,” Kelce said, sounding like a guy who just can’t walk away yet.
Kelce admitted the grind of the season can wear on him, but the playoffs? It’s the big moments like these that keep him going. “It’s moments like these, the playoffs, these memories that I’ll have with the teammates and coaches that I go to war with… wanting to keep that legacy or keep finding new ways to create those memories. I think will, I don’t know, just keep fueling me and my love for football,” added Travis.

So, his retirement plans are still up in the air. Maybe we can all give it a rest for a while and just see how the Super Bowl goes for the Chiefs. And how Kelce performs in the big game. Once the Super Bowl is over, both Kelce and the rest of us will have plenty of time to think about what’s next.
