Imagine Patrick Mahomes getting his hands on another explosive receiver from what he already possesses in Kansas City. Well, that imagination could come true sooner rather than later after the Super Bowl concludes on Sunday. The moment the news of Cooper Kupp getting traded from the Los Angeles Rams came to light, franchises who are looking to add offensive weapons to their roster started hovering over Kupp’s situation in LA. And one of those teams, as per ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler, could be the Kansas City Chiefs.

Fowler believes the Chiefs could pull something like a DeAndre Hopkins deal to add the $80M All-Pro (from his extension back in 2022) to their roster. See, the thing is, the Hopkins deal hasn’t really worked out for the Chiefs. To bring the Titans’ receiver, the Chiefs first gave up a fifth-round pick. And that could have easily gone on to become a fourth-round pick if the Chiefs did play him for more than 60% of snaps on their way to the Super Bowl. However, since he hasn’t played that many snaps (49%), the pick would remain a fifth-rounder.

But whenever the Chiefs did give Hopkins a chance to shine on the gridiron, he failed to live up to the expectations. Hopkins has only caught three passes for 18 yards in his last 3 games. Maybe that’s why the Chiefs are going back to showing interest in Kupp. Yeah, that’s right. Before getting Hopkins, the Chiefs did take a close look at Cooper Kupp. However, they wanted to trade for a guy who didn’t have a large salary while avoiding giving up higher picks.

Considering how Kupp has faired in his final five stretch of games with the Rams, catching only 10 passes for 143 yards and no TDs, Kupp’s value has plummeted significantly. And if you go about his productions since that 2021 Super Bowl-winning year, where he hauled in 145 catches for 1,947 receiving yards and 16 TDs, Kupp has failed to emulate that Triple Crown year ever since. Injuries haven’t allowed him to play a full season while stopping him from eclipsing that 1,000-yard mark.

So, at the very least, the Chiefs may have to send a fifth-round pick like the Hopkins deal to the Rams. This would be enough for them to get their hands on a former Super Bowl MVP. Now, while they think about making a move to strengthen their receiver room. Two of their receivers could turn out to be a secret weapon against the Eagles in the Super Bowl.

What’s your perspective on:

Will Cooper Kupp be the missing piece for Mahomes, or just another costly gamble for the Chiefs?

When the Chiefs were yet to play the Texans in their divisional round face-off, a lifelong Chiefs fan dropped a prediction. In an exclusive interview with talkSport, Cole DeRuse thought DeAndre Hopkins could have been the secret weapon for the Chiefs in the playoffs. After he played only 49% of his in the regular season, DeRuse thought the Chiefs were preparing Hopkins for something greater than just being a fringe player. “I think they’re preserving his body. He’s 33, preserving his body, implementing him into the system, and just kind of getting him ready for the playoffs.” However, DeRuse has since been proven wrong, considering Hopkins’ run in the playoffs.

Out of those two games, vs. the Texans and the Bills, Hopkins has only caught 1 pass out of 3 targets. But Hopkins isn’t the only receiver who has failed to deliver in the playoffs. Hollywood Brown, who came back from a sternoclavicular injury just a few weeks back, has only played 4 games.

However, those lack of contributions still didn’t stop CBS Sports from dropping an insane prediction ahead of Super Bowl night. “Hopkins has only one catch this postseason, and he didn’t have one in the divisional round, which ended his 184-game streak of having at least one catch every game of his career, including the playoffs. Brown has caught just 12 passes for 126 yards receiving in four games played, including the postseason. Mahomes will hit both for touchdowns in throwback moments for each wideout.” Well, it seems unlikely this would happen, considering their lack of usage in the playoffs.

But you can’t just write anything off for Patrick Mahomes. Who knows, maybe he will target Hopkins and Brown more in a change of tactics to win a 3-peat. If he does, it would surely take the Eagles by surprise and could probably end up as a game-changing moment in New Orleans.
