Whenever Patrick Mahomes secures a win for the Kansas City Chiefs or scores a touchdown, his electrifying celebrations are hard to miss—full of raw energy and wild passion. The Chiefs’ narrow victory over the Bills has dominated headlines, but what truly stole the show was Mahomes’ unexpected celebration. Unlike his usual displays, the star QB capped off the gritty win with a powerful ball spike. The move immediately drew comparisons to the legendary spikes of the NFL legend.
Remember the Gronk spikes? Well, apart from being an incredible tight end, Rob Gronkowski was known for his iconic spikes. “The spike is the best celebration — it’s a classic — and he definitely brought it to a new level, trademarking it for himself,” Ted Karras once said about Gronk’s spikes. “Now you say, ‘Gronk Spike.’ I think that’s pretty cool. He changed the verbiage of the term.” Mahomes did the same celebration yesterday when he scored a TD in the fourth quarter. But the Chiefs QB was reminded that he still needs to work on his spikes. “Work on that spike game, bud. You’re going to need it in a couple of weeks.
Perhaps Mahomes knows this as well. Taking to X Mahomes posted, “I also apologize. That is why I don’t try to spike the ball. 😂.”

After Mahomes’s touchdown spike celebration, Justin Watson just pushed the game into the Chiefs’ side by grabbing two extra points. The score then became 29-22. But Curtis Samuel of the Bills scored a 4-yard TD from Josh Allen’s pass and the score became 29-29. The situation was absolutely terrible, but Harrison Butker‘s 35-yard field goal just changed everything and the Chiefs entered into the Super Bowl again.

Patrick Mahomes celebration and Rob Gronkowski’s sign action
The first time Rob Gronkowski did the spike celebration was in 2010. Then, year after year, it became Rob’s signature move. The Urban Dictionary has it included as well. Surprising, right? According to Urban Dictionary, “The action of forcing an object (usually a football) into the ground with tremendous force as a way of celebration or because you’re f—ing hammered and felt like doing it, anyway.” This is what the dictionary has described as the move that Patrick Mahomes also imitated.
But you know, before the Patriots Superstar, former NFL wide receiver Homer Jones, did the Spike celebration for the first time on October 17, 1965, against the New York Giants. But you know what the difference is between Gronkowski’s TD spike celebration and Jones’s? In Homar Jones’ words, “He spikes because of emotion and I did it for conservation.”

But after 2022, Patrick Mahomes has rejuvenated the touchdown spike celebration of the four-time Super Bowl champion. He just pumped fans by doing this and dominated the opponents. But there is one more game left in the season. Do you think it’s exciting if Mahomes will do that again?
