The Chiefs have begun their quest for the 3-peat by going 6-0 to start the season. The latest win coming at the home of Super Bowl LVIII opponents, the 49ers further underlines their credentials. Another SB win will firmly establish the Chiefs dynasty and given their run so far they will have a good shot at doing so. Their success has not only been built on the field but also on the mentality of how their players are ready to put the interests of the team first rather than chasing personal glory.
Despite the 100% win rate, there have been some concerns, particularly in the offense with Patrick Mahomes calling for an improved show. However, on the defense side of things, the Chiefs look more assured and it is largely down to one man.
Chris Jones has been solid without being spectacular this season. He has been a towering presence on the other side of the ball but hasn’t racked up the stats that could lead him to winning the Defensive Player of the Year honors. But Jones is neither worried about his numbers nor winning the DPOTY and his selfless attitude caught the attention of Tavia Hunt, the wife of Chiefs owner Clark Hunt.

Hunt uploaded an Instagram story where Jones was answering questions at an NFL media appearance on October 18. The DT was asked if he wanted the Super Bowl or defensive player of the season in 2025 and he didn’t hesitate in his answer. “I’ll take a Super Bowl over a DPOY any day. Most of the time it’s about the unselfish play, you gotta get yourself out of the mind frame of ‘me’ and think about moreso the people around you.” Jones said. Tavia Hunt’s captioned the story: “@Stonecoldjones is a legend.”
Jones has clearly brought into the Chiefs’ ideology and is ready to let go of personal individual success in favor of the team’s glory. Jones has never won a DPOY, but he has made five Pro Bowls and two All Pro teams. Despite his lack of individual honors, all that matters for the DT is another Super Bowl title.
He has been the Chiefs’ most disruptive defender but has only three sacks in six games. However, he is confident that his numbers will improve and once again highlighted the need for the team to win games takes precedence over anything else.

He said, “We’ve played five games, I’ve got three sacks. I’m not complaining. Like I say every year: I’ll get my numbers. Might be early. Might be later. I never really harp on, ‘I’ve got to get these certain numbers before this [date].’”
Jones further added, “I’m never really satisfied, because I want the numbers. They don’t really matter, but I would love to have two sacks every game. I think, more importantly, it’s about winning the game and playing the best you can play with your ability.” The Chiefs are taking their time getting up to speed on the offense but on defense, the likes of Jones and Nick Bolton have been able to keep the team performing in the same manner as they did last season.

He has four solo tackles and seven assist tackles among his 11 total tackles. These are the finest figures, but Jones has contributed more than just tackles to his team’s success. The guy puts a lot of pressure on his opponent, causing them to make mistakes, and Bolton takes advantage of those mistakes.
Nick Bolton has already made 38 tackles in 2024, which is incredible when you consider it. The guy has made 25 solo tackles and 13 assists, which is just out of the world. If the Chiefs continue to use this defensive strategy, they can finish the season without losing. It is too early to say this, therefore let us not make assumptions and wait for time to tell us what will happen.
