The relationship between the Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes, and Andy Reid is one written by the stars—or to be more specific, the Chiefs’ front office. Ever since the QB joined Reid’s arsenal, which he was already leading since 2013, the magic has been palpable. That very magic was on full display on January 26 in the Chiefs’ AFC Championship clash against the Buffalo Bills, and Clark Hunt seems to have taken notice—unafraid to flaunt it to the world. But before we get to the meat of the story…
Not only did Mahomes lead his team to a 32-29 win this Sunday, but he did so in style. The team has reportedly made it to the conference title in all seven seasons with the QB. Not just that, this is the third straight year that they have won the AFC title, and it’s only the fourth time in history that a team has made it to the Super Bowl in three straight seasons. Now, to give you an idea of how successful the Reid-Mahomes duo has been till date…
Ever since the former Texas Tech player became a full-time starter for the Chiefs, no other team in the league has won as much games or scored as many points. This can also be attributed to the kind of mentorship the HC has always prioritized. For Reid, it’s not just about playing well. It’s also about playing well outside the lines and breaking the boundaries. “I want you to stretch the offense…Let’s see how far we can take it,” Reid would tell a rookie Patrick in 2017.

As per many, it’s like Reid had found his soulmate. As the team’s former wide receiver Marcus Kemp dissected it, “(Reid) has made this environment around him where he keeps people around who he believes have the same core values. I do believe he brought in Pat for that reason.” And in his own confessions, the veteran coach has also never shied away from admitting the same. “We are very lucky to have him (Patrick Mahomes) here. The stuff he’s doing just doesn’t happen, and that’s why he’s the greatest at doing what he’s done in a relatively young career here,” Reid had said just week.
But, be sure that the love is definitely not one-sided. For the superstar quarterback, Reid is as close as one can be to a father figure. “They have genuine respect for one another. (Mahomes) looks to Andy like a guru,” Reid’s longtime agent Bob LaMonte had told the New York Times last year. A cool snippet from the 2021 season also surfaced where Mahomes was seen discussing his coach with the Raiders’ defensive end Maxx Crosby: “He’s super cool. It’s almost like your uncle, you know what I mean? He’s like cool, cool, cool, but you can’t … disappoint him because he’ll get mad at you. But he’s going to give you your freedom to do what you want to do.”
So, understandably, the duo has fallen into a beautiful rhythm. One that stomps all over the league, dropping opponents like a house of cards. Just to tell you another beautiful instance that would encapsulate their camaraderie: Ahead of the 2018 season, Mahomes and Reid were reportedly discussing a playsheet. The QB—in his second year as an NFL guy—told Reid—an NFL coach in his 20th season—that he didn’t like one of the plays. So what did Reid do? He immediately crossed it off. One word: Trust. One word that the Chiefs’ owner Clark Hunt has also come to appreciate in recent years…
So when a journalist asked the owner a question every NFL team has been trying to find the answer to, Hunt was confident, proud, and most importantly assured in himself and his choices. On January 26 after the game, the KCC CEO gave a reality check to the rest of the 31 teams with a strong verdict when questioned, “Why it was so hard for other NFL teams to have a chance at a three-peat?”
According to an X update by the former managing editor for Chiefs Wire, Charles Goldman, Hunt reportedly said, “Those teams didn’t have the combination of Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes.” His answer included Reid and Mahomes’s deadly combination, who has successfully led the Chiefs to three Super Bowl titles and 17 postseason wins.

With this, Patrick Mahomes has become the second quarterback in NFL history to achieve such a feat of wins, after Tom Brady (35 wins). And now, one more Super Bowl will lead him and the Chiefs to achieve the rare feat of etching their names in the NFL’s history.
In this conference championship, Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid’s team showed great strength. Mahomes even tried to push the score with his running game, leading to a touchdown. Although the game was close and intense, the Chiefs left no stone unturned to defeat the Bills. But how are the Chiefs so consistent? Have you wondered?
Clark Hunt revealed the reality of Patrick Mahomes and team
At the age of 29, Patrick Mahomes broke the tie with former NFLer Joe Montana. He did so after becoming the second QB with most wins in playoff history. His historic and much-needed win has maintained their 3-peat aim this season. But how are they so inevitable or consistent in winning? Well, according to Clark Hunt, “Patrick Mahomes is at his best when the game is on the line. Him and his teammates always find a way to get it done.”
Hence, Hunt thinks “the experience the team gained through the season really helped them tonight.” Even a couple of days ago, the Chairman mentioned that ever since he hired coach Andy Reid and drafted Patrick Mahomes, he never followed any superstitions. That’s because the owner and the entire Chiefs community have full faith in their men. In addition, the team’s overall strength lies in their unity as well as delivering winning plays exactly when they’re needed the most.
