Tom Materson honored at Chiefs' kickoff—Does this show the NFL's commitment to community heroes?

Back-to-back champions Kansas City Chiefs are set to take on Baltimore Ravens on their home turf to kick-start this year’s NFL journey. The three-time Super Bowl champion Patrick Mahomes is slated to lead the team against the reigning NFL MVP Lamar Jackson, with excitement reaching the roof at Arrowhead Stadium.

Although the game itself is promised to be an exciting watch, the Chiefs introduced a game day program that has caught the eye of many. Back in 2019, to celebrate the Chiefs’ 60th season in the NFL, they launched the Lamar Hunt Legacy seat at their stadium. This seat is used to honor a lucky season ticket member who has the chance to occupy the golden seats located in Section 121.

And, for this year’s NFL kickoff at Arrowhead Stadium, Tom Masterson is the one receiving the special recognition. With a 10-year STM on his resume, Masterson’s journey as a teacher began in 2012. Starting as a fourth-grade teacher at McGregor Elementary, Masterson soon found himself as an Assistant Principal at McGregor Elementary and Sherwood Elementary.

When asked about his switch to principal, Masterson stated, “I loved helping my students to become better learners, and I wanted to increase my impact on a school community. So now I help make teachers better educators.” In his quest to help teachers become responsible educators, Masterson took upon the role of building principal at Jeffries Elementary.

But currently, Dr. Tom Masterson has found his level as Executive Director of Schools for SPS. Banking on his recent success in managerial positions, Tom received the accolade of getting featured in Springfield’s 2024 40 under 40 list. Well, Tom Masterson isn’t technically the first one to make it to the golden seat at the start of this season.

Steven Graver was the first one to find himself occupying the Lamar Hunt seats during the preseason encounter against the Lions. Graver has been associated with the STM for the last 28 years while continuing his occupation as a farmer for 43 years. But the thing that makes Graver more special is his association with Eagle Scout.

Besides his 43 years working as an Eagle Scout, Graver performed exquisitely as a leader while helping more than 25 scouts to reach his level. Elsewhere, David Garcia got his special recognition vs the Bears. Being a pediatric neurosurgeon at Children’s Mercy, Garcia pays close attention to his son’s and daughter’s flag football team training.

Nonetheless, the Lamar Hunt Legacy seat is not the only attraction going into the Chiefs NFL kickoff, as pre-game entertainment is slated to take over at Arrowhead Stadium.

Coco Jones begins this year’s NFL kickoff with the Chiefs vs Ravens game!

Popular American singer and actress Coco Jones has been invited to sing the national anthem before the teams lock horns in the NFL kickoff. Although she will be under the spotlight, this isn’t the first time Jones has found herself in the grandest of stages. Back in 2013, Jones sang the national anthem when the Rams went up against the Bears.

But looking at her recent performances, Jones was there in the NFL Legends weekend last year’s match between the Rams and Eagles. The thing that makes Jones’s presence more special is her family background. Her father, Mike Jones, was a defensive tackle in the NFL, having enjoyed nine years at the top.

He even had two Super Bowl appearances (XXXIV and XXXI) on his resume, but ended up losing both during his career. With so much happening at this year’s NFL kickoff, we fans can’t wait for September 6 to come sooner. As the Chiefs start their title defense, will the Ravens spoil the party that begins at the reigning Super Bowl champions’ home turf? Well, the answers will be there pretty soon for us to check out.
