As soon as the NFL’s legal tampering window opened, the Chiefs knew what they had to do first- sort out that problematic left tackle position. LT was a menace for the Chiefs last season—they just couldn’t find stability in that position. Players came and went like a revolving door, but the result was the same—Patrick Mahomes was sacked!! Sacked!! Sacked again. Until Joe Thuney was moved into left tackle, Mahomes just couldn’t stand in the pocket without the fear of hugging the gridiron. But the moment the Chiefs, out of nowhere, traded their season MVP to the Bears, the Chiefs Kingdom was in utter disbelief. Like, what the hell? Until today, of course.
Just 10 minutes into the start of the NFL’s legal tampering period, the Chiefs have rolled their dice. Their first move comes in the form of “a new blindside protector for Patrick Mahomes,” as reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Kansas City is bringing former 49ers offensive tackle Jaylon Moore from the Bay Area. Reports suggested they have reached an agreement on a 2-year, $30M contract with $21.24M fully guaranteed at the time of signing. See this move could seem exciting, but it comes with its fair share of risks.

Moore comes in as a starter after starting just 12 games in four seasons with the 49ers. I mean, he mostly played backup to future Hall of Famer Trent Williams. So, it wasn’t really possible for Moore to get snaps even if he wanted to. But last year he showed enough potential in just 5 starts (career-high) to catch the attention of the Chiefs. Starting every game from week 12 to week 16, Moore’s pass protection grade only dropped beneath 75.0 just once.
And not only that. Mahomes’ new protector only gave up 1 sack, allowing just 10 QB pressures—pretty impressive if you ask me. He also finished his season ranked 45th among all the offensive tackles who played a minimum of 20% snaps. Great!! But hold on, there’s actually more to Moore’s numbers last season. Against the run game, he had a grade of 70.1 and wasn’t penalized once for his 259 offensive snaps. So, it’s pretty clear why the Chiefs took a gamble on him.
And while the Chiefs remain busy this offseason to bring in more reinforcements for a vengeful year, it seems they have more good news for Patrick Mahomes. His bestie, Travis Kelce, might be coming back for one last hurrah.

Andy Reid spills Travis Kelce’s stance on retirement
2024 may not be the year Travis Kelce will fondly look back upon and smile. Career-low numbers in receiving yards (823) and TDs (3) despite playing 16 games without injury, Kelce never got going last season. And by the time the Super Bowl LIX rolled around with a 3-peat opportunity of a lifetime, Kelce’s season went from bad to worse. He only caught 4 catches for 39 yards while the Chiefs got battered left, right, and center in the Super Bowl. The Chiefs TE even came out and said that Super Bowl loss was an “all-time low” for him.
What’s your perspective on:
With Kelce staying and Moore joining, are the Chiefs gearing up for another Super Bowl run?
Have an interesting take?
So, of course, retirement was on the cards as Kelce even asked for some time to ponder whether to hang up his cleats or return for another season. The Chiefs even gave him a deadline of March 14 and said they would respect whatever decision their 10-time Pro Bowler comes up with. But after much contemplation, it looks like the Chiefs’ record-breaking TE will be coming back for at least another season. Andy Reid said on The Bettor Angle podcast, “He’s all in.”

I mean, before Reid spilled his thoughts on Kelce staying committed for another year. It was the man himself who confirmed he was coming back for one last run, “I know I got one on my contract. I’m gonna give you guys everything I got, baby.” So, get ready for some Kelce and Mahomes link-up again next season. Whether he comes back as the Kelce we know or the one that is slowly fading away—that’s a different question. But whatever does happen, if this is his last, it will be one hell of an emotional season for everyone in Kansas City.
