CeeDee Lamb vs. Brandon Aiyuk—who's the real WR1? Let's settle this once and for all!

The Dallas Cowboys‘ problems with contract extensions are not ending. Multiple talks between the owner and GM, Jerry Jones, and WR CeeDee Lamb‘s agents have failed. No deal has been signed until now. Another WR, Brandon Aiyuk, is in a similar situation. He also had multiple talks with his team, the San Francisco 49ers, but nothing materialized. Many fans are comparing both situations. But an analyst put an end to that.

While discussing both situations on the Good Morning Football show, Peter Schrager said, “Brandon Aiyuk is a good wide receiver; CeeDee Lamb is an elite wide receiver.” If we check their stats, he is right. With a wonderful 2023 season, Lamb topped the league with 135 receptions, 92 long receptions, and 12 touchdowns and was second (behind Tyreek Hill) with 1,749 receiving yards. Aiyuk, on the other hand, only had 75 receptions, 76 long receptions, and 7 touchdowns for 1,342 yards in 2023. His comments came after Jerry Jones’ recent comments.

Jones told The Athletic’s Jon Machota, “I don’t have any urgency to get it done.” Lamb, who has remained silent about the talks, took a shot at the owner by tweeting, ‘lol’. These cryptic messages back and forth do not help the franchise. Schrager said that America’s team would have liked signing the deal in the early off-season.

He added, “You would have liked to have gotten a deal done earlier in the summer. And certainly, as we head towards the preseason, you’d like to see CeeDee Lamb with the team working out and making impacts.” However, he pointed out that neither party prioritized the deal. Citing Clarence Hill, he claimed that Lamb’s agents spent last week at the Paris Olympics.

Whoever may be at fault here, CeeDee Lamb is making his reservations known. He is staying away from the training camp. But Cowboys QB Dak Prescott understands the importance of their star WR. Expressing his eagerness for Lamb to join the team, he told Nick Harris, “I know y’all want to ask; I got urgency for it to happen.” Cowboys fans must be hoping for him to return at the earliest. And so must be The Faithful.

Aiyuk might not be among the top-rated wide receivers in the league, but he has been consistent with the 49ers. However, his future at the franchise is uncertain.

Brandon Aiyuk’s NFL future

In the early off-season, the Niner Empire declared their interest in resigning their contract with WR. He attends the team meetings but doesn’t participate in the practice sessions. During a practice camp last week, he was clicked doing a handshake with GM John Lynch and coach Kyle Shanahan. Those photos gave me a glimmer of hope regarding a contract extension. However, the situation is far from that.

The franchise is in talks with various teams to trade off the WR. The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reported the 49ers are looking for a WR in return for Aiyuk’s trade-off. They were in talks with the Pittsburgh Steelers regarding the WR’s deal. Since the 49ers are also evaluating other offers, they have put that offer on hold.

Russini added that the WR turned down an offer from the New England Patriots, which could have paid him $32 million per season. His reason was that the Patriots’ QB situation was not up to his liking. With the season less than a month away, his fans would like clarity.
