This NFL season will go down in history as the season of rookie QBs. The season has had 10 rookie QBs in the starting lineup this year. The New York Giants’ Tommy DeVito became the latest when snapped the ball in the game against the Dallas Cowboys. But among all the 10 names, one name stands out. Houston Texans’ rookie quarterback CJ Stroud.

He was the 2nd round pick in the NFL Draft of 2023 and has played in all the Texans games so far. The 5-4 Texans are up against that 2-8 Arizona Cardinals next week. Will he manage to cement his claim to the MVP title this year in the upcoming games?

Winning an NFL MVP title is a dream for many pro players who have been playing the game for years. A rookie can only dream of dreaming to win the title. Yet, in 1957, that’s what happened when Jim Brown of the Cleveland Browns was crowned NFL MVP. And he wasn’t even a quarterback! He was a running back. And not only did he win the MVP title in 1957, but in the year after that and 1965 as well. How does CJ Stroud compare to that stunning resume?

Stroud leads the NFL in touchdown to interception ratio at 14-1. He also set an NFL record by throwing 186 passing attempts without an interception. He also leads the league in completions and passing yards & passing 1st downs on 3rd-4th downs. Stroud has recorded 2,626 passing yards and helped his team score 15 passing TDs for a total of 90 points!

But it might surprise some to know that he wouldn’t have been a part of the Texans at all and could’ve gone to the Carolina Panthers.

When the NFL Draft 2023 was about to begin, there was a lot of whisper in the Panthers’ camp as to who they would pick. They had secured a first-round pick from the Chicago Bears and traded their pick in the upcoming draft of 2024. Adam Schefter of ESPN had reported that Panthers owner David Tepper “loves” Alabama’s Bryce Young, while Head Coach Frank Reich “likes” Ohio State’s CJ Stroud.

But as fate would have it, ownership won over coaching and Young went to the Panthers, while Stroud went to the Texans. It’s a mistake they’re sure to regret every week as they slip further and further down the rankings. The Panthers have a score of 1-8, with seven games more to go. Even if they win all the upcoming games, their score will only improve to 0.500.
